I gave her a look like I wasn’t going to let this go, and she knew me well enough to know I wouldn’t sit here wondering, so she either had to tell me something, or I was going up there.

“I heard her on the phone this morning. It sounded somewhat heated, so I woke your dad up and had him go check on her. They have been up there for about half an hour, so I don’t know how it’s going. Just give them time, okay?”

I felt terrible for yelling like that at her. “I’m sorry I swore, but with all due respect, you don’t know anything about what’s happening with us… we barely do.” She gave me a look, and I immediately felt like I was sixteen again.

“Lincoln, I know a lot more than you think, I always have, and I know you have never acted like this toward any other woman. I also know you care deeply for each other. I can see it when you two are together, but I think she might be a little confused.”

Mom placed her hands on my cheeks. My heart did the weird flutter thing again. “She is struggling knowing she’s leaving soon and needs time to figure it out.”

“But—” I tried to speak, and she just raised her hand to stop me. She placed her hand on my arm and looked at me.

“I’ve already said too much. Just give Aubrey some time. She just needs her dad right now, okay? This is between them for now.”

She got up and started cooking again for Aubrey and Pops. I went on eating without saying anything else.

A few minutes later, Aubrey came down dressed and ready for her day. Pops was trailing right behind her. She seemed okay. Seeing her gave me an instant sense of comfort.

It took everything in me not to stand up and take her into my arms. She must have read my mind because she bent down, from behind the chair, put her arms around my neck, and kissed my cheek.

“Good morning, sleepy head.”

She began to walk away, and I reached over and grabbed her hips to pull her toward me. “Good morning, beautiful. Everything okay?”

I rubbed her lower back. I love how perceptive we are to each other’s need for touch. Her touch is my new favorite drug. She massaged the back of my neck with one hand. Her nails grazed over my skin and turned me on. I could tell she knew by the radiating smile that was plastered on her face.

“Of course, just an interesting morning. I will tell you all about it later. How about I make you and me some dinner at your place so we can talk alone? I’ll have it ready when you get home if you want to leave your key with me, so I don’t have to steal the spare again.”

She placed her open hand out for the key. She gave me a simple smile, but it didn’t quite reach her eyes. I noticed the blue of her eyes wasn’t as vibrant as it usually is. I reached into my pocket and handed it to her. I felt an almost painful loss when she walked out of my reach. She walked over to grab her food, and I looked at Pops. He gave nothing away. Without making direct eye contact with me he walked over and grabbed his plate of food.

“Link, how was your dinner last night? Did you and your coworkers get a lot done? What did you guys choose for the play?” Pops asked.

“Yeah, we figured out most of it, but we’ll finish today after school and start auditions mid-week. RENT won the vote. It wasn’t my top choice, but I’m still excited.”

“I’m really excited; it’s my absolute favorite!” Aubrey added.

He chuckled and looked at her. “That’s great! We can’t wait to see how it turns out, let me know what you need from us, and we will make it happen. If I need to cover some shifts for either of you, let me know.” He barely looked at me while talking, but I didn’t think it was intentional. I would look at her over me, too.

We ate in silence, except for the news playing in the background. I went to my house to grab my work stuff and then returned to say goodbye to everyone. I asked Aubrey to walk me out. I just wanted to hold her and kiss her before I left. When we got to the door, she wrapped her arms around me, hugging me and putting her head on my chest. My heart did that little flutter again. I feel like melting every time it happens. I couldn’t help but kiss the top of her head. It felt like she was holding something back, but I didn’t want to press her and ruin her day.

She looked up at me with those perfect eyes. I felt like I could see the world in her eyes. This is my favorite version of her, no makeup, nothing hiding her perfect skin and eyes. I leaned down and kissed her nose. I felt like I was going to drown in my feelings.

I finally pulled away and put my forehead to hers for a moment, then I started kissing her again and kissed down her neck a little. I picked her up so her legs would wrap around my waist.

“I missed waking up to you, Songbird,” I whispered against her neck.

I felt her giggle then she made this beautiful, soft moaning sound that sent a wave of pulses straight to my dick. She pulled away to look at me as she intertwined her fingers into my hair.

“I missed it too, but I had to shower and check in with Callie. I didn’t want to disturb you.”

I leaned in to start kissing her neck again, but she stopped me by placing a finger across my lips. “I always want to be disturbed by you,” I groaned, going in for another kiss. “Disturb me, baby.”

She gave a seductive smile and whispered, “Don’t start something you can’t finish before you leave, big boy.”

I gave her a groan. “I’ll give you a big boy, don’t tempt me, baby. I’ll take you upstairs right now and bend you over the—” She covered my mouth and looked toward the kitchen. She chuckled and shushed me as her cheeks flashed a pretty shade of pink.

Then she leaned into my ear. “Later.”

She gave me a final peck and wriggled out of my hold. She started walking away, but I pulled her back toward me. I put my hand on her cheek and then lifted her chin with my thumb and finger.
