“You think Aubrey is over you already? Moving on or something?”

“NO! Absolutely not,” At least, I hope not. I got an awful feeling in my stomach, and there was a lump in my throat that I couldn’t swallow.

He was giving me a pitiful look like he felt bad for me.

“What? Do you know something I don’t?” I said it a little too loudly.

He put his hands up in defense. “Dude, chill. I’ve just never seen you spiral out like this. Are you ok? I’ve had one convo with the girl, which you were basically holding her during, by the way. How the hell would I know something you don’t?” I didn’t answer and just kept looking at him. “See, this is why I don’t get involved with bitches.”

My fists started to clench together, and I gave him a nasty look. “Aubrey is not a bi—"

He put his hands up again. “Women, I mean women, my bad.”

“What do you mean anyway?” I asked through gritted teeth.

“I mean, you guys have been dating for all of a few days, and she’s already fucking you up; this isn’t you, bro. You don’t get all torn up over girls. You need to fuck someone else and get over this chick.”

“You aren’t helping.” I rolled my eyes at him. The thought of touching anyone but her turned my stomach.

“What exactly do you want me to say? I’m not the best person for love advice, bro. It sounds like you won’t be okay till you guys talk it out. Did she seem mad when you left?”

“No, she said we would talk later… She's making me dinner.”

He looked at me like I was crazy. “So, what exactly is the issue if she’s acting normal?”

He was making me more mad by the second, but realistically, I knew it was not his fault and, honestly, he was right. I’m just in a mood and can’t articulate my feelings because this is all new.

“Just never mind. She’s not acting normal; something is off, but you can’t help.”

“Sorry bro, I just don’t get women. I don’t think I ever will. Single for life over here.” Then he laughed loudly.

That broke my grumpy mood a little. It made me laugh because Elijah is the typical single-for-life guy, and I can’t believe I ever sounded like that.

We started chatting about my play and he offered to hook me up with a friend of his that does stage lights for the play, so at least he’s good for something. Our guy retired last year so we need a new one. He set up a meeting for the guy to come by later this week to see if the play is something he can help with. He was heading toward the door to my office, but he turned and grabbed something from his jacket.

“Oh hey, can you give these to Aubrey? I told her I would get her VIP tickets for when we are in Connecticut in June. Let her know it also comes with a wristband that covers unlimited food and drinks; she will get the wristbands when they check in that day. I got her four tickets, but if she needs more, tell her to let me know. Oh, and tell her to bring her hot friends.” He slapped my chest with the back of his hand.

I stared down at the tickets and then back up at him. I didn’t move. He started to pull them back, but then I grabbed them.

“Yeah, got it.” I wish the thought of her being in Connecticut in June didn’t bother me so much. “I’ll walk out with you. I’m going to leave early so I can see my girl.”

Then he laughed deep and loud. “You are so pussy whipped bro.”

I smiled back and slapped his shoulder. “You are such a dick sometimes. At least I’m getting some.”

He laughed. “Fuck you, dude.”

I sat in my car for a while before heading home. I was tempted to rip the tickets up, simply because I didn’t want to have this conversation, but I knew she would be seeing Elijah here and there, and I knew he would make sure to ask her if she had gotten them. I turned my phone on and I saw I had a message. The words in the text made my blood go cold. I placed the tickets on the seat next to me and drove away.

AUBREY

I went grocery shopping and settled on making Link pulled pork tacos. I prepped everything so it would be ready when Link texted to say he was on his way home. I worked on one of the songs for the play and then took a nap until he texted me. Which he never did.

I heard the door open. Link was home early. I checked my phone and had no missed calls or texts, so I was confused. I got up and walked into the kitchen. I’m sure he was looking around the kitchen and snooping to figure out what I was making. I leaned against the door frame and smiled.

“Hey, you were supposed to let me know you were on your way. You’re early.”

He looked at me and didn’t say a word. He looked like he had a bad day. I rushed up and tried to hug him, but he stepped back, and my smile instantly fell.
