“You don’t want to swim anymore?” I ask.

“It’s not that… I, um… don’t have a swimsuit.”

I can’t help but roll my eye. “Lillith, I’ve already seen your body.” And does thinking about it drive me mad. “Just get in here. Before I throw you in.” The lilt of my tone is teasing, but she still swallows hard before removing her top with shaking fingers.

I’m about to tell her I was just teasing—worried she mistook me—when she charges forward, leaps into the air, and cannonballs right next to me. A mighty splash covers my face and hair, and I have to spit out some of the lake water that got up my nose.

When she surfaces, she’s sporting a mischievous smile. I know what’s about to happen, and I have no intention of stopping it. Her arm rears back, and with a battle cry, she sweeps her arm forward, drenching me in another mighty swell of water.

I shake my head, spraying droplets of water in her direction, and she cries out in protest. My lips tip upward as I take in her expression, and before I have time to say anything, she lunges forward, putting her full weight on my head and shoulder. I let her dunk me under the water, knowing that’s what she wishes to do, and when I surface, she’s practically glowing.

“Got you!” She cackles, pushing off me and putting a few feet of space between us.

Yes, my goddess, you do. “Careful,” I murmur, wading closer to her. “I might want to return the favor.”

She squeals as I lunge for her, trying to swim backward, but she’s nowhere near as fast as me. I circle my arms around her shoulders, pulling her into my chest as laughter peels from her open mouth.

“D-Don’t you dare!” she cries, tipping her chin up as I slowly pull us both below the surface. “Kain! Don’t—”

The rest of her protest gets cut off by the water, and when I bring us back up a moment later, she gives me a mighty, albeit teasing, glare. “You suck.”

“So you’ve said.” I push her sopping hair back off her forehead, my heart threatening to break my rib cage. Do you want to kiss me as much as I want to kiss you?

Her lips part, and it takes every ounce of control I have not to take her right here in the middle of the lake. Please, put me out of my fucking misery.

Whether she’s aware of it or not, her face inches closer to mine. I can practically taste her, can feel her mouth parting for me, begging to be claimed.

“Kain…” she whispers, her eyes fluttering closed. “Kain, I’m… scared.”

So am I, flower. So am I.

“I know.” I rest my forehead against hers but don’t lean in for a kiss. Not yet. Not until she’s ready.

Her breath hitches, and she finally, finally, finally presses her lips to mine. I thought the stolen kiss from the first night was earth-ending, but now I know I was wrong. So wrong.

My tongue teases her lower lip, and she parts for me with a moan. The sound lights my veins with fire, and a growl tumbles from my mouth as I take her lip between my teeth.

A hiss. Another moan. I break.

“Fuck, Lillith,” I groan, grinding my hips against her core. I’m so fucking hard, and I know she can tell by the little gasp that pours from her mouth. Her nails dig into my shoulders as I take the kiss deeper, savoring the taste of her on my tongue.

“You’re so sweet,” I murmur, holding back a moan as she drags her teeth over my lip the same way I had done to her. “So fucking addicting.”

Her legs tighten around my waist, and she grinds ever so slowly against my cock. A hiss leaves my mouth, and my fingers dig into the flesh of her ass, trying to bring her impossibly closer.

“I need you, Kain,” she moans, grinding her hips into mine. My heart leaps, soars to the skies above, but it’s short-lived.

As soon as the desperate words fall from her lips, her muscles freeze, and she jerks back like I struck her. Her eyes, once filled with so much lust it looked like it would consume her, now take on that frightened sheen I’m so used to.

“I-I’m sorry… I don’t know what got into me…” Her words are soft, so soft I’m sure I wasn’t supposed to hear them.

I try to catch her gaze and convey to her all the words I can’t bring myself to say. She refuses to meet me, and it feels like someone has dropped my heart from a fucking skyscraper.

It goes splat on the pavement when she wades back to shore, and I have no other choice but to follow her. Numb, numb, numb. I wish I could rip out the wretched organ causing me so much pain. I’ve never felt this, never imagined it was possible for an emotion to consume me so fully.

“Where are you going?” I call after her. Please, flower. Please come back to me.

“I think I’m done swimming,” she says, feigning a nonchalant expression. “I’m kind of tired. Can we go back to the cabin?”
