“Uh-oh.” Carlotta’s voice jerks me out of my trance, and I turn my head and see Callum storming through the sea of people, a ravenous sheen in his eyes. I can’t help but notice it’s pointed at the sliver of skin showing around my chest.

Kain runs a hand over his face, his grip tightening on my waist with the other. “Fuck. Lillith, do you mind going with Carlotta? This shouldn’t take very long. I’ll find you guys when I’m done, okay? You promise to keep her safe?” The last question is pointed at Carlotta.

“Swear on my life. Come on, lovely. Let’s go.” Carlotta chirps, hauling me off Kain’s lap by the elbow. My mouth pops—in surprise, in mortification, I’m not sure—but Carlotta doesn’t seem to notice as she pulls me toward John’s office.

I swear Kain curses behind me, but I don’t have the chance to turn and look.

“There’s a private bathroom in John’s office,” Carlotta chirps, seemingly uncaring about whatever hell we just left behind. “Trust me, you do not want to use the one the rest of the club has access to.”

I let out a hollow laugh as she leads me across the floor. I try not to worry as I lose sight of Kain in the crowd, even as the aura of being watched pours over me in waves. It’s somehow different from the sensation I get when Kain watches me. It’s darker. Malicious.

Normally, I’d brush it off, but something tugs at my gut, pricking the hair on the back of my neck. A voice.

And it’s screaming the word danger.

CHAPTER THIRTY-EIGHT

KAIN

Callum’s lip curls in a snarl as he nears me, and those disgusting pointed teeth make an appearance.

An abomination. A repulsive act against nature. A snake in the garden. A piece of filth to be discarded.

“What do you want?” I bark, my eyes locked on the last spot I saw Lillith’s black waves.

Callum sneers, his gaze following mine. “What, you don’t trust me around your little whore?”

I blink, and a door shatters in the back of my mind.

Kill. Kill. Kill.

I shake my head. In. Out. In. Out. You can’t kill him here. Soon, but not yet.

“The fuck do you want, Callum?” I growl, never taking my gaze away from that spot.

Callum huffs. “For starters, I’d like a little respect.”

“Fuck you.” I snap my head toward him. “This bullshit merger between the clubs isn’t going to last long. You know it; I know it. So how about you drop the act?”

Callum cocks his head. “You seem a little bitter about it, Kain. I’m surprised. You know, considering you were the reason it had to happen in the first place.”

“We both know that’s not true. If I was in charge, the Serpents would be blown off the face of this fucking city.”

“Ah, but you’re not in charge, are you?” His lip quirks in an infuriating smirk. “You’re just a pathetic gun for hire. A glorified garbage boy.”

I wonder if he knows how close he is to losing his teeth.

“Do you have something important to say? Because if not, I’m going the fuck home.” I growl, turning away from him before the last word passes my lips.

Callum jumps in front of me, his arms spread wide. “Don’t be so hasty. I was hoping you’d want to make amends.”

“Amends?”

“Yeah.” His lips part, and those disgusting teeth flash red under the neon club lights. “Your little bitch should do the trick,” he muses, wetting his lips. “You know, Kain, you shouldn’t have paraded that sweet little pussy around like you did earlier. It made certain people… envious.”

He jerks his chin over his shoulder, and my heart stops as I see the two leather-clad men pushing open the door to John’s office. I move to sidestep Callum, but two more men spring from the crowd, moving in until I’m surrounded.

“Get out of my way.” I turn my gaze to the largest of the three. “Now.”
