I felt Cari’s surprise. “Yes.”

“And yet,” I took another step toward the monster. “She does not feel the urge to heal.”

“No, she does not,” Cari said grimly.

“She twists...” Brigid mumbled.

“Let’s do it quickly,” Kieran said to Cari. “We don’t have long.”

“Can he hear us?” I asked, still staring at the monster.

The urge was too overwhelming to ignore. The monster before me was hurt. I could feel it deep within, even though the creature seemed unconscious. Its red eyes were closed, but it was still breathing, even if it was dangerously slow.

No one stopped me as I walked to it.

“Don’t!” Kieran raised his voice as I reached to touch the monster.

I did not stop.

He was warm to the touch.

His pain and suffering hit me like a shock wave. It was almost as though the monster wanted to communicate everything that had happened to him. He had been tortured and hurt, experimented on until he lost consciousness. I saw it all.

The monster opened its eyes. I did not lift my hand off his face.

Kieran made a noise. I could not look away.

Don’t be afraid, I said to the monster. I will heal you now.

You should leave me to die,the monster replied quickly without looking away or making a move to rip through my chest like I thought it would. I cannot be saved.

I did not believe him. He was hurt.

Reaching into him was easy. Unlike the other monsters I’d run across, he still had his mind up to the surface of his being. He wasn’t buried deep within like the others. He was here, aware of everything the queen had forced him to do.

“Jasmine?” Kieran said behind me.

He sounded worried. He needn’t be.

I reached into the monster and saw him. The wounds on his body were minimal compared to the aching of his soul.

He did not want to live. He did not believe he could be saved or corrected.

Cari shushed the others.

I closed my eyes to avoid the monster’s demanding gaze and went in.
