Feremir

THE PRINCESS OF THEUnseelie was covered in blood. She held the blade tightly, and as she forced a smile on her quivering lips, she did not seem mad despite everything else pointing toward it.

Master Portaler lay next to her feet. He was dead.

“You lost,” she said. “You have me, but you won’t get Kieran.”

“I don’t need your little brother, princess,” the queen replied, gesturing at her soldiers to capture the princess. “I have your crown. I have a queen to put on the throne."

The princess did not resist. Perhaps she knew there was no way she could kill all the soldiers and escape. When the soldiers reached her, she dropped her weapon and faced the queen.

“You don’t have your monsters,” the princess replied. “You can no longer control them.”

The queen glanced toward me for a brief second.

“I control the monsters to keep the real ones away,” she replied. “Your kind is the reason we had to take extra precautions. Now, your rulers shall bow to me.”

“No one will believe that,” the princess said.

Her voice was slightly higher now. She wasn’t convinced by what she was saying.

“But it is the truth,” the queen said, once again glancing toward me. “I knew your plans to attack us for years. Our armies weren’t strong enough to defeat yours. I did not have a choice. I don’t need to create any more monsters. Your kingdom has fallen. The war is over. I won.”

“Kill me then,” Fiona said. “If you have all the control like you say you do, you don’t need me.”

I did not know why the princess wanted to die. It made little sense.

“Maybe I should,” the queen replied with a cold calm.

“My queen,” I intervened. “I hope I understand the events of tonight correctly.”

The queen turned to me. I could see in her eyes that she doubted my loyalty to her cause now. That, I would have to change.

“My queen, if you have the Unseelie throne under your control,” I continued. “We might need the princess to keep any dissidents at bay. The Unseelie will submit completely if the princess rules over them as their new queen, along with the king of your choice. And since she will be under our control, her family's supporters will not have an outlet to rebel against you.”

The queen gave me an incredulous look. “Feremir, my boy... I did not know you possessed such talents for politics.”

“I am but a humble servant to you,” I replied.

She smiled.

“She creates monsters,” the princess spoke to me. “She tried to turn your sister into a monster. She...”

“I consider it a sacrifice!” I interrupted her. My voice echoed in the queen’s chambers as I focused my gaze on the princess. “The Queen of the Seelie works purely in the light. If she decided to create those vicious creatures to fight your kind, she did it to protect our realm.”

The princess looked disgusted. The queen smiled. She seemed proud.

“I am glad you understand, Feremir,” the queen said. “And you are right. We might need the princess to persuade the Unseelie to follow our chosen king instead of rising against him.”

She turned to the soldiers remaining in the room with us.

“Take the princess to the dungeons,” she said. “I shall decide what to do with her after conversing with our allies in the Unseelie Kingdom. And send soldiers to capture the prince and his companions. We cannot let them escape with our mind magicker. But tell the soldiers not to harm them unless they resist."

She glanced my way.

"Make sure Jasmine is unharmed," she added. "I still hav hope that we can mend her ways."

The soldiers hurried.
