Calling onto Qai was a reflex. The door to his dimension opened swiftly as I pushed the soldier’s sword off mine, making an arch with the tip of my sword to turn and meet another attack coming from my left.

I had jousted with Unseelie soldiers many times before, but this was different. We were in a small room, surrounded by ten soldiers who attacked the two of us at once. Although Casja’s magic gave us some advantage, we were outnumbered.

As I kicked the woman off me and turned to a dark-eyed soldier with a longsword, I knew I had to improvise.

“Fog!” I shouted.

Casja acted quickly. The air around us became humid and warm before a fog circled us all. It was so thick that I almost had trouble seeing my nose, but it worked in our favor.

Cari, I said. Help Casja and me so we don’t hurt one another.

Done. Cari said.

I felt Casja’s mind touching mine. Although we could not converse without Cari’s direct involvement, I had a better sense of Casja now. She was right behind me.

Out of reach...

Qai was closer to the ground, so I knew how to avoid hitting him already. With our minds connected, so did Casja.

As I lifted my sword and went after the soldiers who had us surrounded, I knew I would not put my sword through either of them by mistake.

The soldiers were good at fighting. But without their sights and without any means to communicate with each other, they could not survive for long.

Balls of fire and pieces of stone flew all over the room, but Casja quickly called on her wind to block them before they hit us. Flashes of light were met with the obstruction of the fog, but the ones calling onto their light realized their mistake only after I used the flashes to locate them and disarm them before they could thrust their swords at me.

I knocked a man out before he even got a chance to meet my attack and went after the next soldier without pausing for a second. On my other side, Casja and Qai took out our attackers one by one.

Although I could not see them, I could sense them both as we fought together.

The soldiers fought bravely.

But when the fog lifted, there was only one standing.

He was a larger man. His smile was crooked as he feigned courage against the three of us. Still, the tip of his sword dropped to the ground in surrender.

I took a step toward him.

“You cannot win this, prince,” the man said. “You are surrounded.”

“I know,” I said as I knocked him out with the hilt of my sword.
