There was a darkness in her. Something twisted and broken.

But behind the fog of things she hid from me, I could tell that she meant it when she said it was over.

Now that she had me, she had no reason to cause any more suffering.

“Good,” I said, pulling away from her mind with a sense of disgust at what she lacked. “Then, I can die in peace.”

Chapter 43: Kieran

Little time had passed since the last time I’d been in Winter Castle, but that felt like it was a lie. Much had happened.

So when I entered the room and located the only significant change there, I was almost relieved.

“They searched my desk,” I said to Fiona as she entered behind me.

“They would,” Fiona replied. “They were worried about your whereabouts for quite some time.”

“But that’s the only thing,” I said. “How can it be so similar and yet feel so different?”

Before she could reply, I walked to the window and stared out into the city. Lord Tynan’s soldiers were entering the courtyard from the southern gate; their emblems sparkled underneath the sun. Beyond them, tendrils of smoke rose from the chimneys of the houses in Qam.

Life went on as always.

“I was the same,” Fiona said finally breaking the silence that had settled over us since entering my room. “No one had entered my room while I was away, but it... It feels off.”

“Why do you think that is?” I asked.

“When our mother died,” Fiona said. “I refused to sleep in my room for months. Father was grieving and he had you to take care of, but he still found the time to tell stories to me every night before sleep. Because I could not sleep otherwise.”

“And now, he is gone,” I whispered.

“That he is,” Fiona replied.

We stared out into the distance for a few silent moments.

“When you were gone after the trials,” I said. “I didn’t leave my room for a week. Father was always there, talking to me. Consoling me despite his own grief.”

“And now, we will do that for each other,” Fiona said, putting a hand on my shoulder. “We will heal from this, brother.”

“I hope so,” I hesitated.
