I looked at her. I wasn’t sure if I could talk about my father.

“I know,” I whispered.

Marlian understood.

“Are you here to take back your crown?” she asked. The others seemed surprised, but I was accustomed to Marlian’s direct questions.

“No,” I said. “I’m here to save Fiona.”

“So it is true,” Marlian said. “She is here.”

I nodded.

Marlian’s expression flickered with anger.

“And that bastard is forcing her to marry him so he can take the throne,” Marlian said.

“He is,” I said.

“And you are going to save Fiona,” Marlian said. “Then what? You are going to leave the realm to that brat?”

Casja’s mouth opened wide as she stared at Marlian. Cari seemed amused.

“I don’t have a choice,” I said. “We don’t have...”

“Fiona is older than you,” Marlian interrupted me.

I was surprised at the seeming change of topic, but Marlian was like that. There was no way of anticipating where her mind would choose to focus next. It was always better to let her speak and do your best to follow her trail.

“Yes,” I said.

“That means she is the rightful ruler now,” Marlian said.

“Yes,” I replied. I did not know where she was going with this.

“Good,” Marlian said. “She will know what needs to be done. I assume you want me to send her a message?”

“Can you?” I asked.

“I cannot,” she replied. “They must be keeping her locked up. I don’t know how to send her a message.”

“Orla is at the castle too,” I told Marlian.

“Oh,” Marlian smiled. “That changes things.”

She closed her eyes. Marlian was a mind magicker as well and she was likely sending a mental message, but before I could warn her, Cari spoke.

“You cannot send her a direct message like that,” Cari said. Marlian opened her eyes and looked at her. “There is a mind magicker at the castle, listening.”

“You stopped me?” Marlian asked Cari, looking impressed rather than offended. “Who is the mind magicker who can listen?”

“Lady Queill,” I said. “She is a mind magicker.”

“Is she a double?” Marlian asked.

“Yes,” Cari said.

“What is a double?” I asked.
