Syn probably told him not to speak to me, but the creepy butler guy proceeds to ignore me as he picks up the plates and follows Syn, Royal and Gemini out of the kitchen.

There’s one plate of food left on the kitchen island, and it looks identical to the three plates that just left the room.

I’m not sure if it’s mine or if it belongs to the guy—did Syn call him Moran?

There are several pans and dishes on the side, but none of them have food in them any longer. Chances are that plate belongs to the butler, and I’m going to have to make my own meal, so, because I need to clean up anyway, I gather up the bigger dishes and set them soaking in the sink.

The kitchen is enormous and looks like something straight out of a showroom—the kind that shows people everything they could possibly have in their kitchen.

Syn was right before. I can’t cook, but the idea of using this kitchen makes me want to learn. Under other circumstances, I’d look up some recipes, but I’m not doing that for him.

Not that it sounds like I’m going to have much free time anyway.

I’ll sacrifice sleep if it means I have some time to search this house for the secrets hidden here.

I’m busy loading some of the dishes into the dishwasher when the butler walks back in.

“That’s yours.”

Straightening, I find him pointing at the plate of food. “Thank you.”

He starts to turn, and I rush over to the island.

“Wait. I didn’t get your name.”

“Seamus Moran.”

“Have you worked here long?”

“Yes.”

This guy has the personality like the marble floor: cold and flat.

“When will you be back?” I ask. If I can get him to warm up to me, maybe he can tell me something.

Seamus drags his gaze over me, and for the first time, it feels like he’s really looking at me. There’s a slight sneer on his lips as he meets my eyes. “Mr. Keyingham will call me when he’s done with you.”

“Did you know his brother?” I blurt out.

I figure it’d probably be quicker to start a fire by rubbing two wet sticks together than trying to warm him up, so if he’s not coming back, this may be my only chance…

“In this world, there are people who can ask questions, and there are people who should realize that answers come at a cost that few can afford to pay. I would appreciate it if you didn’t burn this house down this week. I’ll be busy enough next weekend, cleaning up after you.” With that, he leaves, closing the door behind him.

Slumping against the island, I blow out a breath.

I’m only leaving here by next weekend if I’ve found what I need.

Although the dinner looks delicious and I am hungry, I finish loading the dishwasher and wipe the sides down before I pick up the plate and some clean cutlery.

When I reach my room, I walk over to my desk, but as I get close, my phone vibrates. Setting the plate down, I pull out my chair and then sit, before taking my phone from my back pocket.

I’m expecting the message to be from Penny, but it’s from a number I don’t recognize. I don’t need to recognize it.

All initiates must download the Elite App.

Instead of clicking on the link, I suck in a deep breath and hold it for a moment. After releasing it, I reach for my bag and pull out my charger.

The phone I have is the same one I had when we lost everything. Sure, it’s an iPhone, but it’s at the stage where the battery only lasts a day if I don’t use it. Once it’s charging, I click the link and download the app.
