Slipping the keys into my pocket, I head over to the bedroom, curious what Tori is doing in there. As I walk in, both she and Royal appear from the attic.

“What are you doing here?” My question is directed to Royal.

“What about you?” he asks instead of answering my question.

I shrug. “Virgo decided we’re not going.”

“Basketball practice.” He sets a battered silver suitcase down beside him before shutting the door to the attic. “Plus, I figured someone needs to keep an eye on Tori.”

“So, why are you here?” I ask the blue haired girl. “Did Grandmother Bergmann refuse to let you in her castle? Or did Penny rescind her invitation after you made her clean the church with you?”

Tori’s eyes go wide. There are cameras all over the church—which I know she’s aware of—but it amuses me that she doesn’t think I’d watch.

I’m always watching.

“He didn’t say she couldn’t help.”

“Do you think he needs to?” I ask.

As Tori’s eyes grow wider, Royal places his hand on her shoulder. “Relax. He doesn’t know, and he won’t care.”

Naughty, naughty, Royal…

Maybe he will care, maybe he won’t. But what Syn will care about is what I’ve suspected for a while now…

Royal’s catching feelings.

Tori reaches for her case and starts to wheel it towards the door, stopping in front of me when I don’t move. She looks up at me. “I’m going to my room.”

“Here, let me,” Royal says hurrying over to take the case from her.

He looks at me, then I grin and step aside.

Maybe I will stay here…

I linger behind them, watching as Tori heads for the stairs. Royal starts to follow but stops in the middle of the landing. “Where are you going?” he asks her.

Tori glances over her shoulder. “My room.”

Royal gestures vaguely towards a few doors causing Tori to make a noise somewhere between a laugh and a snort.

“In the basement. Where it’s always been.”

Leaning to the side, I focus my attention on Royal. Surprise. Apparently, he didn’t realize Syn still had Tori down in the basement.

I’m aware. I go down there almost nightly.

Royal turns his head sharply towards me. “He’s still got her down there?”

“Uh-huh.”

“Pick a room,” Royal growls at Tori.

Tori’s eyes dart about, and I have a feeling she’s waiting for Syn to jump out from somewhere. When that doesn’t happen, she points back to the room we’d just been in. One tucked safely between mine and Royal’s.

Royal turns, dragging the suitcase like the thing lost its wheels years ago. He storms straight past me, back into the room we’d just left, waiting for Tori to follow him.

Yeah, I’m definitely not checking into a hotel.
