With his face pressed snugly to her head, he squeezed her so tightly her back cracked. Then he lifted her off her feet and swung her around, the way he had when she was a little girl.

Goodbyes finally over, Gia slid in behind the wheel. Zaxx was already settled in the passenger seat, scrolling through Spotify, looking for road-trip tunes. In the back seat, nestled in with their packs, was a cooler full of soft drinks, bottled water, and a tub of washed fruit—and an IKEA bag full of the good junk food: Starburst, sour gummies, M&Ms, Goldfish, Doritos, and caramel corn, and a whole box of Ding Dongs.

Gia fired up the engine, smiling at the rumbling thunder as she goosed the gas. She opened the Maps app on her phone and tapped the address she’d preloaded. “According to this, it’s about four and a half hours to Tulsa.” She looked over at Zaxx and grinned. “Wanna see if we can do it in under four?”

He laughed and set his phone in the console. “Thunderstruck,” by AC/DC, set off thumping the speakers. “I’m just the passenger, baby. You’re in control.”

With a final wave to her family, Gia put Cammy in gear and hit the road.
