“About what?”

“Just that… Mac and I want to take you out tonight.” Smooth Finn. Ronan’s not going to like that one.

“Really? I thought Ronan said I couldn’t leave the apartment?”

You can’t.

“You’ll be with both of us, Angel. We will keep you safe.” I climb off of her and stand at the edge of the bed. Reaching my hand out, I sit her up in front of me, “We’ll go to our club. There’s plenty of security there. Do you like dancing?”

“You’re club?” She looks genuinely surprised that we would own something so fun.

“Yes, our club, Angel. It’s one of the few operations we run legally, and it gives us a place to conduct meetings and let off steam.”

“Will… will Ronan come with us?”

I tuck a strand of curls behind her ear, “I’m not sure. I know he’s busy with everything going on. He’s trying to track down whoever stole our shipment.” I decide not to mention that he’s also trying to figure out why his dad wants us to keep Harper here.

I’ve known Liam McDermott for a long time, and he isn’t the type of person to protect someone, especially a Whelan, out of the kindness of his heart.

Harper breaks eye contact with me and looks at her lap. I know she’s hurt that Ronan is doing everything he can to avoid her. The two of them may fight like cats and dogs, but it would take a complete moron not to notice the chemistry between them. I grab her chin and bring her eyes to mine, “Hey, don’t worry about him. He’ll come around eventually. Let’s go out and have some fun, okay?”

“Okay, but I don’t have anything to wear.”

“Don’t worry. I’ll have a dress and shoes sent over for you within the hour. Why don’t you draw a bath and take your time getting ready? Mac and I will meet you by the elevator at nine.”

I lean over and give her a quick kiss before leaving her room and closing the door behind me. I walk down the hall and knock at Mac’s door.

“What’s up?”

Pushing the door open, I sigh deeply, “You and I are taking Harper to Kings tonight.”

“What? Why? Ronan said she wasn’t supposed to leave the apartment.”

“She’s not.”

“So, why are we taking her there then?” As Ronan’s second in command, I can tell he’s hesitant about disobeying a direct order from his older brother.

I run my hands through my hair and lean against the door frame before taking a deep breath, “She was reading this book, and I asked her what it was about. She said it was about a happily ever after. Then like a fucking moron, I asked if she wanted a happily ever after. She said yes, because why wouldn’t she? Then I said she deserved one. She said I did too. And because I’m a masochistic asshole, I started internally spiraling about the fact that she’s Declan Whelan’s granddaughter, and I haven’t told her what he did to me. Because if I tell her, she’s going to feel guilty, and I don’t want her to feel guilty. I also don’t want her to look with those big green eyes like I’m broken. I hate when people look at me like that. Not to mention that I haven’t slept with a woman in I don’t even know how long. And I especially haven’t slept with the same woman more than once. I can tell that I’m starting to feel something for her, and it’s only been a goddamn week. I don’t know if I can handle having feelings for someone. Especially if that someone is Harper Whelan… Hayes. She noticed that I was thinking about something, so instead of telling her the truth, I panicked and told her we were taking her to Kings.”

Mac’s eyes widen when I finally take a deep breath. “Ummm… Okay, that was a lot.” A smirk pulls at his lips.

“Dude, this isn’t fucking funny. I don’t know what’s happening to me.”

“You’re right. Totally not funny,” he hides his laugh with a cough as he strides over to me, “I just don’t think I’ve ever heard you say that much at once.”

“Exactly my fucking point.”

“It’s not that difficult to figure out, man. You like Harper. I like Harper. We both know Ronan likes her, regardless of him acting like the biggest asshole on the planet. So, let’s have some fun and try not to think about it too much.” He puts a hand on my shoulder, “Okay?”

I feel my shoulders relax. “Yeah, okay. You’re right.”

“Let’s go talk to Ronan about tonight. He’ll get over it. If we’re taking her to Kings, there will be plenty of our security. Nothing will happen.”

“I know. I just know he’s going to be pissed off.”

“He’s always pissed off. Don’t worry about it.”

“Hey, do you know if he’s heard anything about the shipment or figured out what’s going on with Liam?”
