“Don’t call him back, and avoid his calls for the time being. Let’s see how quickly he calls back.”

After hanging up with Nick, she called Joe’s cell phone, but got his voicemail. She left him a message telling him what happened, and what his brother said to do, all the while hoping the nervousness in her voice was not as evident to him as it was to her; he worried so much already.

This game was starting to wear on her, perhaps she shouldn’t have pushed it, but she couldn’t help herself. For sake of her sanity, she needed to resolve this issue as soon as possible so she could move on with her life.

At about 2:00 p.m. her phone rang. Mr. James. She let the call go to voicemail. Again, as soon as the light flashed, she retrieved the message.

“Listen here, missy, I just talked to Darcy and I know you’re in the office. You can’t hide from me forever. You will, I repeat, will call me back, or else.” His voice came across uncontrolled. Not like him, not at all.

Or else what? Jerk-face.

She called Nick and played the message for him. Before the message ended, her phone rang again. “Jesus, the monitor on my phone is showing that he’s calling again. It’s only been a few minutes.”

She retrieved the most recent voicemail and played it for Nick.

“Damn it, Elizabeth, pick up your phone.”

Mr. Kent entered her office as Mr. James’ message aired.

“Nick’s on speaker phone,” she informed her boss. “And Nick, Mr. Kent just walked into my office.

“How many calls have you received from Mr. James?” her boss asked.

“Three since I’ve been back from lunch. He appears to get a little angrier each time he calls.”

“Well, I’ve received two now from him demanding that I come in here and make you call him back,” Mr. Kent replied as he shook his head.

“Christ, he’s going to completely flip out or have a freaking heart attack at this rate,” Nick commented. “Maybe the heart attack wouldn’t be such a bad thing. I think you guys should just keep ignoring him for the time being.”

“Okay,” Elizabeth replied reluctantly, and hung up the phone.

“Are you all right?” Mr. Kent asked, his gaze filled with concern.

“Yeah. I just want it over with.”

He nodded and exited her office.

She dialed Joe’s cell phone to let him know what had transpired since her last message. Sadly, she got his voicemail again. If she could only hear his soothing voice the nerves rattling her entire being would probably calm.

Before packing up for the day, she ignored several more phone calls from Mr. James, each one a little more threatening than the prior one. She was sure his head was about to explode in anger, and she wondered how he could be stupid enough to leave the threatening messages on her voicemail. He had to know she could save them in the event she needed them.

Arrogance.
