We both turn as we hear the soft padding of little feet. Emily and Daniel have returned from their playroom, their faces sleepy but happy.
"Can we watch a movie, Mommy, Daddy?" Emily asks.
"We'd love to," Lauren says, looking at me for confirmation.
"Absolutely," I add.
Together, we move to the living room, settling on the couch, our kids between us. As the movie plays, I can't help but think this is true happiness—a simple evening spent with the people you love the most.
Eventually, the children drift off to sleep, their heads resting on our laps. We carry them up to their beds, tucking them in and exchanging goodnight kisses.
Then Lauren and I head to our own room, slipping under the covers of our bed. As I hold her close, her head on my chest and her hand entwined with mine, a profound sense of peace washes over me.
"I love you," I whisper into the dark room, the moonlight filtering through the curtains.
"I love you too," she replies, her voice soft and full of warmth.
We both close our eyes, secure in the knowledge that we've built something beautiful together.
And as sleep takes us, I can't help but think that the best is yet to come.
