“What about that witch Hathor and her lover Amun?” Tristan asked. “What ever happened to her?”

Minerva scowled, her eyes narrowing as she spoke. “Her revenge was a miscalculation, causing a chain of unintended consequences.”

“What the hell does that mean?” Tristan asked.

“It means she didn’t get her revenge,” John stated. “Yet another dark witch we must replace.”

“I thought we took care of that with potion?” Tristan looked at Minerva as he applied her potion to his burns.

She nodded. “We could do with more, however; it would have been better had we got at least one Crete Witch.”

“We can always try again. Whenever you decide to let me get my revenge.”

Minerva looked at Tristan and shook her head. “You’d be wise to learn from Hathor’s mistakes, Tristan.”

I felt myself pulled again. The answers only added more questions to me as the library came back into view.

My lips opened and words began to burn through my throat as The Fates spoke through me. The moment my body returned to my own control, I felt my knees give out, and I fell to the ground beside my desk.

“Brady?” Mom’s voice called from the library doors. “Are you in here?”

“Y-yes,” I said hoarsely. I began to cough as my throat felt dry from The Fates use of my voice.

Mom’s steps rushed behind me, my head turning to see her running to my side. Her green eyes widened with concern as she fell to my side and helped me back to my feet.

“What happened? Did you see something?” she asked.

As I nodded, I managed to whisper “Water,” my throat dry and parched.

Mom nodded in understanding and rushed to the small water cooler near the back of the library. When she returned, I chugged down the two small cups she had filled for me. They weren’t nearly as much as I would have liked, but they were enough for me to at least speak to her.

“What did you see?”

I opened my mouth to tell her about the first vision, but only a riddle left my lips. The words The Fates had spoken through me before she had entered the library, but only the first portion. No matter how hard I tried to tell her everything, my throat would only tighten, and my coughing would return.

“In the whisper of shadows, a wounded foe stirs. From the echoes of battle, vengeance incurs. A dance with darkness, a witch’s embrace. A vampire’s hunger, a sinister trace.”

Mom gently pressed her hand against my mouth, halting my attempts to recount the entirety of the prophecy. She shook her head as I looked back at her, desperate to defy The Fates.

“Don’t force it. You know better.”

I sighed and nodded as I surrendered.

“So, the wounded foe, that would be Tristan?” Mom asked.

I nodded again.

“And the witch’s embrace, he is with her. We were right about their alliance?”

Again, I nodded.

“And a vampire’s hunger. They have a vampire with them as well?”

My head began to ache as I bobbed up and down again.

“Then that is all that The Fates believe we need to know for now. Whatever else you saw, they will allow you to share it when the time comes.”

Mom reached down and helped me back to my feet, a soft smile on her face. “Come on, Sweetheart. You’ve done enough. I’ll tell your dad what you saw. You go get some rest in your bed. Drink plenty of water.”
