Brady frowned as he looked back at Roberto. “Do you know what he looks like?”

Roberto nodded again. “Yes, I have a picture. After he had disappeared, the council sent his picture to those in the education field.”

Brady nodded and continued to walk on towards the house. “Good, meet me in my father’s office in an hour. Bring the picture and we will see if we can identify him as the vampire.”

“Yes, sir,” Roberto responded, and with that, Brady took off at a full run, leaving the rest of the wolves back with Edwardo and Roberto.

I held tight to his neck, admiring the speed of a clear alpha. Surprisingly, his wolf skills were not as strong as his sisters’. The idea that her abilities could be stronger than what he displayed was amazing, really. His legs carried us both with ease, his speed close to that of a racing sports car.

We reached the back porch of the packhouse where Alma greeted us with a blanket. She wrapped it around me to cover my naked body, but before she could do the same for Brady, he pushed on and headed straight for the stairs and right to the alpha family’s quarters.

Chapter Fourteen

Brady

She could have died. Had I been even a moment later, she would have been gone and I would have had no way of finding her. The thought sent chills through my blood and my grip around her tightened as I reassured myself that she was real. That she was safe. That the vision I had seen had not come true.

I pressed my lips to her temple as I ran straight for my room with her. It was all I could to do to push out the grisly images of her blood drained and lifeless body laying out in the woods.

Never before had The Fates shown me such a dire vision, nor had they ever granted me the chance to prevent one. The revelation had struck me with brutal force while I was en route from The Brew, compelling me to pull over and shift, guided by an unerring instinct to the exact location of Madie’s ordeal.

The bond between us opened up and helped me to follow her trail. I could feel her confusion about the bond as she ran.

She had been so distracted. She should have scented the vampire far sooner than she had. Thankfully, by the time she had and sent out the warning to Edwardo, I was already nearly there.

I wasn’t even sure she realized her warning had also been sent to me. I hadn’t even responded to it as I pushed myself harder when I felt her impact with the tree. Felt her panic as she couldn’t move, couldn’t even breathe.

My bedroom door slammed behind me with a gust of wind from my magic. As I focused my full attention on my mate, I barely realized that I had used magic to shut the door.

I rushed to my bed and gently laid her there, the blanket that Alma had covered her with falling away to reveal her full body to me. Without hesitation, I immediately turned my attention to her stunning physique, carefully examining every inch for any sign of harm, promising to make the vampire suffer the loss of a limb for each injury inflicted.

“Brady,” she whispered. “I’m okay. I promise. Look.”

She moved her legs, the sight of the movement a relief given her inability to move moments ago. I sighed in relief, but as she moved to roll away, I saw the large, slow healing bruise on her back. The dark purple and blue colors were painfully bright against her fair skin.

I growled at the sight, pulling her back to me and running my hand along the skin there gently.

“I’m going to tear him apart, limb by limb,” I said, my voice dripping with anger. “He’s a dead man.”

Madie’s body shivered under my touch, a small chuckle drawing my attention to her eyes as she looked over her shoulder at me. “Isn’t he already a dead man?”

Her blue eyes sparkled with amusement, the sight softening my heart as I realized how close she was to me. Suddenly, I was all too aware of her skin beneath my touch, fire shooting through my veins as her lips curled into a soft smile.

“Why didn’t you go after them?” She asked. The question baffled me for a moment, my full attention now on the way her lips curled so perfectly.

“Who?” I asked.

“That vampire. And the witch. Why didn’t you go after them? That was the witch from the book, wasn’t it?”

I ran my hand up her spine, sending healing magic under the bruise to help quicken her healing. Under my touch, she shivered, her eyes fluttering closed with a contented sigh.

“Why would I when my mate needed me? They’ll be back, but if I had lost you,” I moved her hair from her shoulder and pressed my lips to the bare tender skin that bore my mark. “I would have never gotten you back. I would have only been a shell of a man, if even that. It wasn’t a choice between you and them, Tinkerbell. It was always going to be you.”

She turned her body to face me, her hand cupping my cheek as her eyes looked into mine. I could feel her uncertainty in the bond. Her worry that I wasn’t being sincere.

She wanted to trust me. I could feel it. She just couldn’t trust herself to know if I was being honest with her.

The bond between us opened completely, the path between our minds flooded with all my emotions as I showed her exactly how I felt for her. My fears of losing her. My adoration for her. The unmatched love that I was filled with just by being near her.
