Alma shook her head before her eyes brightened and quickly nodded. “Yes, hello. Diana Crete-Rigel is going to be bringing in her daughter-in-law. Please ensure that the crones are expecting them. Yes, I know that you run on walk-ins.” I looked up to see Alma’s face turning red. “Listen here, just tell the crones that they are coming in. Let them decide and you just do your job of informing them!”

She hung up the phone and huffed as she looked at me and Diana. “I swear, that little witch girl they brought in as their apprentice has the worst attitude.”

Diana smiled and looked back at me. “You ready to stand back up, sweetie?”

I sat for a minute longer before nodding and finally releasing the trashcan. Diana helped me to my feet and then to the door. She stuck her head out first and looked both ways before leading me out and down the stairs to the elevator for the packhouse garage.

“We’ll take my car. I have a pass to the clinic’s garage access, so it’ll be easier to get past the waiting room that way.”

“I’ll stay here and watch the children,” Alma said from behind us. “You both just keep me informed.”

Alma smiled at me as I looked back at her, and she gave me a tight hug. “We’re here for you, Mija. Don’t you worry.”

I smiled meekly as she walked away from the elevator, the doors opening just as she turned the corner into the den. I could hear the children asking about me and Alma telling them that I had a special errand to run.

When Diana and I got on the elevator, I just barely caught sight of Diego poking his head out and waving to me from the den.

“It’s likely you are what we think you are, and don’t get me wrong. I am thrilled about the news, but I have to ask. Is it what you want?” Diana asked.

I looked over at her, my eyes widened at the question. “I’ve always wanted to be a mom. Ever since I was a little girl.”

Diana smiled. “But is it something you want with my son? I know you two had some ups and downs. And I know you’ve accepted him now, but if you have any doubts about the future with him. Let me know now. I can help you and I will support whatever you want to do. I told you my story, so I have very little room for judgement.”

My brows creased as I thought about what she said. Was she giving me a way out of my bond with her son? Did she think that having his baby would scare me away from him?

“You don’t have to tell me now. Let’s just get you to the clinic and hear from the crones first.” Diana added just as the doors dinged and opened up to the garage.

She led the way to a black escalade, unlocked the doors and we climbed in. I sat in silence as she drove us out into the street and through the town, thinking over the options she had brought to my mind.

Do I keep the baby a secret? Do I take the baby and run away into the woods and raise it all on my own? Was I actually ready to be a mom? Was my rejecting Brady up until recently a sign that I wasn’t ready?

I bit my nails nervously as I thought it over. The world outside the window was little more than a blur.

What exactly were my choices?

“We’re here,” Diana said softly to me from the driver’s seat.

I jumped as I realized we had parked now, my mind trying to catch up to the fact that we were no longer driving through town. I looked back over at Diana, her green eyes softening as she looked back at me.

“Don’t stress too much by what I said, Madie. I just want you to know that you have my full support in whatever you plan to do. That doesn’t mean I expect anything from you. I just want you to know you aren’t alone.”

I forced a smile, my nerves still shot by how quickly this was all now moving. “Thank you, Diana. I appreciate it.”

“Anytime, sweetheart. Now, let’s find out what guidance the crones have for us,” she said, stepping out of the car and waiting for me to join her.

Chapter Sixteen

Brady

“So, when you take over from your mother in the fall, you will be in charge of conveying the Coven’s needs to your sister and will have to work with her to establish budgets between the pack and coven like so,” Jasper said, his voice slow and shaky with his age.

As I leaned my cheek against my fist, attempting to focus on Jasper’s explanation of the financial intricacies between the coven and the pack, my attention kept wandering to the clock.

This meeting was supposed to be ran by my mother, yet she was now thirty minutes late resulting in the old man taking charge in her place. I glanced around the table at the others in the coven council and sighed.

Really, it would have been better if any one of them had taken over instead of Jasper. The old man just couldn’t hold my attention, especially with my mind worried about Madie trying to chase after Tristan through the woods.

I still hadn’t told her about the full history between Tristan and me. She hadn’t exactly asked again since that first night in the library when we kissed.
