The third crone brought over the root plant and smiled as she began to grind it up into a powder before adding it to the potion bottle on the counter beside me.

“Mandrake will give a sort of placebo effect on the baby. It will mimic the magic of a witch mother so that your child develops the protective magic that will help him or her survive their own magic someday. We will also recommend that Brady channel magic through you once a day to help stimulate the effect.” The first crone explained as they finished the potion and began to cork the bottle.

“This is enough for a month. We would like to see you back before the month is up for a refill and a wellness check on your pregnancy.” The third crone said as she handed me the bottle.

“Stassia will give you an appointment card. We don’t usually do appointments, however, given the situation around your pregnancy, we want to be certain you are seen on time. We will up the appointments to every two weeks after you reach the thirteenth week, then every week the last three months of your pregnancy.”

I looked at the bottle in my hand nervously as I nodded. “How often should I take this?”

“Once a day. I recommend you take it with food. Wait an hour after taking it to have Brady channel his magic through you for thirty minutes.” The second crone explained.

Anastasia walked over to me next with an appointment card. “I’ve scheduled your visit, and the front desk sent a message saying that Diana is here waiting for you whenever you are ready.”

I nodded and thanked her as I placed the card in my purse with the potion. “Is there anything else I should do or know?”

All three crones smiled and shook their heads. “Not at this time. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to ask. After all, it is our future you now carry.”

Their words made me feel uneasy. As if the entire world was now rested on my shoulders. On my child’s shoulders. I placed a protective hand over my stomach as the crones all left the room, Anastasia close behind them.

The young witch paused in the doorway and looked back at me. Her mouth opening and closing as though she wanted to say something, but just couldn’t find the words.

After a moment of silence, she abruptly exited the room, leaving me alone to grapple with the harsh new reality. I was only just getting used to being Brady’s mate. I was still mourning my place in Nyte’s pack, no longer able to be his beta as I had always expected to be. My life was completely upended, shifting from one extreme to another, as I was now expected to be prepared to become a mother.

A mother to a hybrid child, and from the sounds of it, my pregnancy wasn’t going to be easy.

I pulled out my phone as I made my way to the parking garage. There was an unread message from Paige.

Paige: I just got off the phone with Grace. Are you getting a pregnancy test done at the Clinic Anastasia is apprenticing at?

Me: Yeah. I’m going home now.

Paige: Well? What were the results?

Me: I’m five weeks pregnant.

Paige: Congratulations! That’s so exciting, Madie!

I let out a long sigh before replying.

Me: Paige, what if I’m not ready? According to the crones, I’m already failing the baby by not being a witch.

Paige: Is that really what they told you?

Me: Well, not exactly. They said that my baby won’t inherit the natural magic immunity that witch children usually get from their mothers.

Paige: I’m sure there is a way around that, Madie. You aren’t failing your baby. I promise.

Me: They gave me a potion. And they want Brady to channel his magic through me once a day.

Paige: See, you aren’t failing your baby!

Me: Did you have to do this with Baer?

Paige: Take a potion? Of course. It’s basic prenatal care. Even humans have vitamins they take.

Me: You know what I mean, Paige.

Paige: I have natural magic, Madie. So, no. I didn’t have to do that.
