“Muffin,” I heard Wolf say.

“It’s fine,” I told him. “It was what needed to be done.”

His blue eyes met mine, and he nodded. I never had any intention of letting him walk out of here alive.

Chad was dead.

Mia was free.

I made a call to my contact in the DAs office next.

“Hal,” I said into the line. “It’s over. It’s done. He ended up dying in the process. Shot on me and my team; there wasn’t anything I could do.”

“Okay, we’re on our way. We’ll take care of the body and paperwork that comes along with it,” he informed me.

“Thank you,” I replied. “And don’t forget to round up those men.”

“Already on it, Cole. Don’t worry, they’re not getting away with abusing their power like that.”

“Thank you,” I said before disconnecting the call.

I walked over to a table where papers and pictures were all spread out. I examined the contents. There were logs that contained details of Mia’s comings and goings. Pictures that showed her leaving and arriving at the office, running, and out with Terry and Ally. He had been watching her for quite some time. Thankfully, I found no pictures of Catherine, or I would have been arrested for kicking the shit out of a corpse.

I sent a message to Hawkeye, letting him know that it was over. She was safe and she was free. I sent the same message to Catherine, then I went back to the process of surveying the evidence that this douchebag had left behind. All while we waited on Hal and his team to take over the investigations.

It was over, I told myself, breathing a sigh of relief. I was happy. This one had gotten to me. I was happy that he was dead, and I never wanted to take another human life. But a man who would put his hands on a woman, a man that would take pleasure in making her afraid, deserved what he got.
