“It’s nice having you here,” I admitted.

“In your office right now? Or here at Shoegasm?” His voice dropped to a sultry low.

“Yes,” I said, returning the wide smile that had been on his face since he entered the office.

He nodded, not saying anything for a bit. “So, do you ever do anything other than work? I mean, the weekend I found you, you were at the bookstore spending Saturdays the way you always used to. Taking pictures in the park like we used to love to do together. But do you ever do anything else?”

“Why do I feel like you’re not asking me about my hobbies?” I asked him. There was an underlying meaning to his question. When Terry was afraid of the answer to a question, he hid it between the lines.

“I guess I’m just trying to figure out how often you spend your time with Bryce.”

“Ah,” I said, appraising him while I drank the latte he’d brought me. “Not that often. The night I called him was a rarity. We see each other, sure, and talk on the phone. But we don’t make a habit of going dancing and spending the night together. Bryce and I have an understanding that what we have—what we do—isn’t serious.”

“You’ve taken him to charity events.”

I smiled. “I can’t go to those alone.”

Another nod.

“What about you? How are you spending your time in the city, other than stalking me?”

He smirked. “I wouldn’t call it stalking.”

“What would you call it?” I teased.

“Getting reacquainted with an old friend,” he replied simply.

I laughed at his remark. “Okay.”

“Okay,” he repeated.

We grinned at each other for a minute before I finally got the courage to speak again. “I can’t thank you enough for all you’re doing here. The guys over in Art love you.”

“Mia,” he said, his tone almost scolding, “please don’t talk work with me. I just wanted a few minutes with you. Just talking to you when you’re not in work mode.”

I nodded. “Okay. Is there something you wanted to talk about?”

“No. No agenda other than making you smile. I just wanted to spend some time with you.”

“Terry, I—”

“Relax, Mia. There are no pretenses here. No worries about what is kept in the light or in the dark. I just enjoy your company. I always have. I wanted an opportunity to talk to you and hopefully brighten your day.”

“You certainly have done that,” I told him, smiling widely. He flushed at my response. “Why, Terry, am I making you blush?”

He laughed. “Yes, ma’am, you certainly are.”

“Good. It’s nice to know I still have that effect on you.”

“Would you like to come over here and see what other affects you have on me?” he drawled out.

That sexy southern accent had come out, and I swear, my sex felt wet at the sounds of it. “No,” I told him, but it came out all breathy, and I knew he saw right through it.

“If you change your mind, by all means, come on over.”

“Same old Terry,” I commented.

“How so?” he asked, placing his coffee down on my desk so that he could lean forward on his elbows.
