I blushed and rolled my eyes at his tired line. “Fine.” I made my way over to him. He positioned me so that I was standing with my back to him. He placed the pool stick in my hands and told me to ready myself to take a shot. My whole body tingled when he leaned into me, pressing himself closer.

And then came my favorite part. He softly whispered in my ear, “Now, if you slowly move the cue like so, you should be golden.” We moved the cue just as he showed me, and of course, the ball went into the hole with ease. “See the difference?”

“Yes,” I choked out as we both stood and turned to face the other.

“Hey, Mia,” Ally cried, interrupting our moment. I forced myself to divert my hazel eyes away from the deep chocolate pools they were drowning in long enough to look at Allyson. “Oh, I’m sorry. Am I interrupting something here?” She giggled like a schoolgirl as she watched us. “I’m Ally, her roommate.”

Terry cleared his throat. “No, you aren’t. I was just giving her some tips on shooting pool.” He took a step away before adding, “I’m Terry.”

“Really? I thought she was quite the pool shark.” She smirked, looking back and forth at the two of us. “Well, let’s get a picture of the teacher and student before we blow this Popsicle stand.”

“Huh?”

“Come on! I know you’re probably bored and ready to go by now. And besides, I only have one more picture left on this, and then I can take it and get it developed. I want to check out the pictures of those boys over there to see which ones I want.”

Terry’s mouth fell open and then snapped shut as he blinked rapidly at her words. I decided to jump in before my “teacher” misunderstood my best friend’s intentions. “For painting, Ally?” I asked, begging her to clarify with my widened eyes.

“Yeah, I need some snapshots to do some portraits with for next week’s class. They didn’t provide any interesting conversation tonight anyway.” She sighed and looked between the two of us and smiled. “Not like what occurred here. Now, stand together. I want a picture.”

I looked at Terry and he gestured me over. Of course, he would make me come to him. I walked over and stood with my back to his front. I jumped when I felt his arms snake around my waist. He pulled me closer, so close I could feel his hot breath on my neck.

“Smile, gorgeous,” he said. I could almost see the smirk on his face.

After Ally took the picture, we broke apart. “Well, this was fun. Thanks.” Turning to Ally, I said, “You ready to go?”

“Yeah, let’s go.” She looked from Terry to me like she wasn’t sure what to make of the situation.

“Please see that I get a copy of that photo,” he said, handing me a piece of paper.

“It’s her film,” I stated.

“I know that, darlin’. But it’s our photo, which makes it your responsibility.” He winked and headed for the door.

“Okay, what did I miss?” Allyson asked as we, too, left the bar.

“Um, I’m not really sure.” I smiled, looking down at the piece of paper he had handed me.

Tears fell from my eyes and onto the picture. I wiped them off his perfect smiling face, and that was where I remained for the rest of the evening: on my bed, staring at old pictures of the man I once thought was the love of my life but who had only ended up destroying me.
