“They’re with me,” I motion to the two guys from the security team Derek assigned to me.

“I see that,” he remarks. “You really took Serena’s boyfriend, huh?”

I shake my head. “Ryan—”

“Relax, I’m only teasing. I saw all the statements and all of the news.”

“Has anyone here said anything?”

“Nah, but you’re gonna find this interesting. She booked singing the national anthem today.”

“She did fucking what?” I ask him. “Perfect. Maybe I should go.”

“Just stay. I’m sure she won’t even come near you,” he tries to assure me. Ryan is probably right; she has no idea that I’m here. When shit went down, the team never even put out a statement.

I make my way to my reserved seating. It’s just below the box seats, and I get a nice view of the field, plus shade. Which makes me happy.

“Boys, sit wherever,” I tell them, motioning around to the empty seats. “Not many people sit here.”

I watch the warm-ups, and it looks like I’ll be in an area all by myself. No one is coming near my seats. I buy some popcorn and water from the vendors walking through the arena. I decide to send Derek a picture of my view. I send him the soccer field, with my legs propped up on the wall in front of me.

Audrey: Your girlfriend is singing the national anthem at this game.

I add in a winky face and send it off. It doesn’t take him long to reply.

Derek: Funny…my girlfriend can’t sing.

Audrey: Well, Serena can.

Derek: You gotta be fucking kidding me.

Audrey: Nope.

Derek: Is your security there?

Audrey: Yes, dear, they are here. And I think they’re completely unnecessary.

Derek: I won’t have this argument again. They’re completely necessary. Now be a good girl or get spanked!

I giggle when I read his last message.

Audrey: Are you going to come here and actually spank me? Because I could get into that.

Derek: Woman, the images you have going through my head right now…

I send him a kissy-face emoji.

Audrey: Your girlfriend is about to start singing, so I’ve gotta go. Love you. Bye!

I don’t have a chance to see his last message because Serena begins singing the anthem. The announcers described her as a “rock sensation.” When she finishes, the whole stadium goes crazy.

“Thank you. Thank you very much,” she croons. Waving both of her hands in the air, she leaves the center of the field and heads for the tunnel. More security joins the area where I’m sitting, and my stomach fills with dread. This means she’s going to sit with me. That’s why there’s no one else here.

Fuck. I’m not ready for this. I make a move to leave and hear my name called from the field. It’s Jess, one of the players. We’ve talked quite a bit before and after workouts and have even gone out for a drink together.

“Hey, girl!” I call to her. “Good luck today.”

“It’s so good to see you. Thank you for coming.” She comes over closer, and I make my way down to the railing where she is. Thankfully, the stadium isn’t very large, and there doesn’t appear to be many people around, thanks to my soon to be seatmate. It takes me no time at all to get down to her. “I was sorry to hear about your dad.”
