Logan had the truck running by the time she slid onto the passenger seat. She remained quiet as he pulled onto the road which led to the highway.

“Barrel told me it’s going to take a lot more than a couple hours for a few days to set things right at the Swanson place.”

She nodded. “He told me the same. I’m sure whatever we’re able to do will help. I don’t mind putting in more than the two hours the Bonners are paying us. I’ll gladly work a few more if it will make a difference.”

“The biggest decision is what to do, and in what order. Barrel made it sound like the work is almost overwhelming.”

Forcing herself out of the depression Miguel’s appearance had triggered, she looked at Logan. “Hey. We thrive on overwhelming odds. The bigger the challenge the sweeter the reward. Right?”

Logan shot her a look before bursting out in deep laughter. Turning off the highway, they continued on a country road before taking a long dirt drive toward the Swanson Ranch. He glanced at her before slowing for a deep rut.

“Are you going to tell me what’s bothering you?”

“I don’t know what you mean.”

“Come on, Sam. We both know something’s eating at you. If it’s none of my business, tell me and I’ll back off.”

Staring out the window, her jaw clamped tight. It wasn’t his business, yet it would be so nice to talk it through with someone.

“Sorry I brought it up.”

“No. You’re right. I’m just not sure I’m ready to talk about it.”

“I won’t push you, Sam. If you want to talk, I’m a good listener.” He stopped the truck outside a weathered barn in obvious need of repair. “Here we are.” Logan opened his door.

“Wait a minute.” Her voice was small, almost unrecognizable. “A man came to the ranch today.” She paused to gather her thoughts. “He spoke with someone in the lodge.”

“You don’t know who he spoke with?”

“I believe it was Wyatt or Virgil.”

“Why would it matter? There are always people coming to Whistle Rock to speak with someone.”

“This time, it was different.” She swallowed, gathering her thoughts.

“Why do you care who it was?”

“There’s this thing. Back in my past.”

Another minute passed before Logan spoke. “Okay. What’sthis thing?”

“I saw the man’s face. I recognized him. His name is Miguel. He isn’t a good man.”

“And you know he isn’t good because…”

She let out a deep, unsteady breath. “Because I was married to him.”

Chapter Ten

Logan’s throat tightened. He didn’t know how to respond to Sam’s announcement. Married? He’d never thought about Sam having a serious relationship. Logan didn’t know why it bothered him. Maybe because they’d become friends.

Yeah, he thought. That had to be the reason.

“You were married?”

She felt her face heat. “Yes. Does that seem ridiculous?”

“Not really. I’d just never thought about it. Guess I figured you would’ve mentioned it by now.”
