This time, it was his turn to wince. Holding up his hands in surrender, he smiled. “You have a point.”

“Tell me why it might be hard to leave me alone?”

“I already told you. I came to Brilliance for a job and to see you.”

Sam riveted her gaze on him. “What job?”

“I was supposed to be a bartender at the steakhouse in town. The owner assured me he’d hold it until I arrived. He gave it to his nephew instead.”

“Then you don’t need to stick around here any longer, right?”

Miguel shrugged. “Turns out, I like Brilliance. I’m applying around town for another job. A grocery store showed an interest in hiring me.”

She cocked her head. “Too bad for them.”

“Come on, Sam. I always worked. It’s just most of the jobs were boring.”

“So you’d quit.”

“Not until I had another job lined up.”

“Seems your recollection is different from mine.” She shot a look at Logan. His amused expression shouldn’t have been a surprise.

“Anyway, the job wasn’t the main reason for me being here. I came to see you.”

“What on earth for? We’ve been apart for years.”

Miguel stuffed both hands into pockets and stared down at his scuffed boots. “Something came up.”

“I don’t care about what came up.”

“You should, Sam. It involves you.”

Her pulse ratcheted up at the same time dread pooled in her chest. “After all this time, what could possibly involve me?”

“Do you remember the divorce papers you sent to me?”

“Of course. You never returned them. The attorney in Oklahoma said I could file anyway. She took care of it.”

He looked back down at his boots. “Yeah.”

Her brows drew together. “Yeah, what?”

“About her filing. She, uh…never got around to it.”

Chapter Thirteen

Sam sucked in a breath, willing herself to stay calm. Miguel had an issue with the truth. He had to be mistaken about the papers. Surely, the attorney would’ve called her once she discovered the oversight.

“Never filed?” Her voice was even, disguising the turmoil she held inside. “How could that be, Miguel? The attorney would’ve called me once she learned of the error.”

“She didn’t know about it until I stopped by her office to get a copy of the final decree.”

“Why didn’t she call me, or write, or something?”

He looked out into the distance. “I might’ve told her I planned a visit and would explain everything.”

“You’ve been here how many weeks and you just decided to tell me?” Sam took a step closer to Miguel. “We both know you’re up to something. I want to know what it is.”
