“I have no idea what you’re talking about, Sam.”

Sam’s voice rose on what she knew to be a lie. “Don’t try to pull your nonsense on me. I know there’s something else going on. Spill it.”

“Fine. You want to know what I want. Here it is. I told the attorney not to file.”

Logan stood off to the side, ready to intervene if Miguel made a wrong move. He had to admit, Miguel was everything he expected.

Her voice continued to rise. “Why would you do that?”

“Because I want another chance with you.”

Sam’s mouth opened, then slammed shut as she considered her response. She wanted to sound calm and rational.

“You’re out of your mind!” She winced. So much for being calm and rational.

“I still love you. Yes, I made mistakes, but I’m older now. More mature.”

She held up both hands, stopping his protest. “If you see your actions in Brilliance asmature, then you and I clearly have different definitions of the word.”

“I know the best approach would’ve been to go to you directly and talk this out. But…” He shrugged.

“Instead, you went to, who?” Sam was afraid she already knew.

“I spoke with Wyatt Bonner and Virgil Redstar.”

She felt blood rushing to her face as anger roiled through her. “What did you say to them?”

“The truth. I told them I wanted to see my wife.”

Surprising both of them, Sam burst into laughter. “You’re kidding?”

“No, I’m not.”

The laughter turned into a guarded expression. “What did they tell you?”

He scoffed, shoving his hands into his pockets. “Not much. I don’t think they believed me.”

“So, they sent you on your way?”

“Yeah. They wouldn’t confirm you worked for them. It didn’t matter. I already knew you did. I decided to stick around and find work.”

“Why, Miguel? There’s nothing for you here.”

“Sure there is. You’re here, Sam. Since we’re still legally married, I figured we could give it another try.”

Her mouth twisted, brows drawing together, causing a deep frown. “I’m going to be real clear with you. There is absolutely no chance we will ever be together again. Besides,” she stepped next to Logan, slipping her arm through his, “we’re engaged.”

Logan stopped himself from revealing the shock he felt. Though his jaw began to drop, he corrected the action, replacing it with a forced smile.

Miguel’s head whipped between the two of them as his eyes narrowed. “When did this happen?”

She squeezed Logan’s arm. “A few weeks ago.”

“Where’s the ring?”

“It’s being sized.” Logan joined the conversation. His answer surprised Miguel.

“You can’t get married. She’s already married to me.”
