It took a moment for him to find his voice. “Uh, thanks. Have you talked to Sam?”

“Sure have. She seemed a little tongue-tied.”

“Did she say anything to you?”

Barrel’s grin preceded a nod. “Yep. She said, thanks. Looked as surprised as you do now.”

Clearing his throat, Logan looked past Barrel to see Quinn walking toward them. “How did you find out?”

“Virgil announced it at breakfast. The look on Sam’s face…” Barrel barked out a laugh. “I thought she was gonna pass out.”

“Any idea how Virgil heard about it?” Relief washed over Logan when Quinn stopped to talk to another ranch hand.

“Virgil didn’t say, but I heard flowers and a card were left in the kitchen before dawn. It was addressed to Wyatt, so Beth took them to him when she arrived. Guess the card wasn’t signed. Wyatt has no idea who left them. Why? You aren’t getting cold feet already, are you?”

“Me?” He shook his head. “Not at all.”Did feeling as if his stomach was tied in a pulsing knot count as cold feet?

“Sam’s a great gal. Sure would like to find me a gal who knows as much about horses and ranching as she does.” He slapped Logan’s back. “She’s a keeper.”

“Yeah.”

“I’d better get back. See ya around.”

“Right. See ya.”

Quinn came up beside him as the truck drove off. “What did Barrel want?”

Logan stared at his boots, ignoring the question as he thought about how to answer.

“Too hard a question for you, little brother?”

Looking up, he pinched the bridge of his nose. “I guess you haven’t heard.”

“Heard what?”

He told Quinn the full story, concluding with Barrel’s visit.

“You’re saying you and Sam are engaged, but not engaged?”

“That would be right.”

A deep bark of laughter emerged from Quinn’s throat. “A counterfeit engagement. Leave it to you to keep things interesting. How long is this going to last?”

“Heck if I know. Until Miguel leaves town.”

“Or you two marry.” Quinn laughed again.

“That is not going to happen. This is a temporary arrangement to keep Miguel away from Sam.”

“Any chance he’s the one who left the flowers?”

Removing his hat, Logan ran a hand through his already damp hair. “I wouldn’t bet against it. The way he left Sam the first time was downright low. He says he’s changed.”

“You don’t believe it?”

“Not a word. He’s slick. Charming one minute and a gutter snake the next.”

“And as soon as he’s gone, so is the engagement?”
