“Not really. Miguel and I were never engaged. We decided to marry, went to the local city hall, and said the vows.”

Logan walked to the counter, refilling his cup. “Shouldn’t be hard. All we have to do is hold hands and act as if we like each other. Are you going to contact the attorney?”

“I called her this morning. She feels awful about what happened. The papers have been filed, and she’s working to get the divorce expedited. She warned me it could still take a few months. All I can do is wait until she gets back to me.”

“Months…” Logan blew out.

“Miguel won’t stick around. Once he’s gone, we’ll call off the engagement. Until then, our lives will go on as usual. Are you still all right with this?”

“It’s a little late to be asking, Sam.”

“Not really. We can call it off now, if that’s what you want.”

Setting the cup aside, he leaned toward her. “I already agreed to this, well…whatever it is. I’m not backing out now.”

Beth and Abigail scrubbed the kitchen until there wasn’t a speck of dirt to be seen. The deep cleaning took place once a month, though both women were adamant about working in a clean kitchen.

“How much longer do you plan to work here?” Abigail looked up from cleaning the two large ovens.

“Why? Do you want my job?”

“No offense, but that’s not what I want.”

“Why not?”

“As much as I enjoy cooking, it isn’t what I plan to do the rest of my life.” Abigail sprayed cleaner on a cloth, wiping it over the front of the ovens.

“What do you want to do?”

“I’ve been studying the use of medicinal plants for a while now. There was this holistic clinic close to the cafe where I worked. I’d hang around the place during lunch breaks.”

“They didn’t mind?”

“It was owned by an older woman. She didn’t mind at all.”

“Was she a doctor?”

“Not that she ever said. Her husband was until he died. She kept the clinic so she could sell her medicinal creations.” Abigail straightened to look at Beth. “They were real popular. She collected the plants and used them to create lotions, soap, creams, and such. Made pretty good money. I found it all real interesting.”

“You’d quit here to start your own business?”

“Maybe someday. This is a great place to work, and the Bonners are wonderful. I won’t leave anytime soon.”

“Margie doesn’t think it will take long. Seth Mangus, the previous owner, was already a success by selling his beef to restaurants. Jake took over that business when he bought the ranch. With Quinn’s help, he’ll expand with Wagyu beef. At some point, Jake and I want to start a family. That’s when we’ll discuss me leaving.”

Abigail rested a hip against the counter. “A little boy, like Daisy and Wyatt’s?”

“I’d take several if they’re like Reece. He’s a real cutie.”

“That baby is the only person who can soften up Anson when he’s in one of his moods.”

“So true,” Beth agreed. “It’s good to see him so concerned about the baby. He and Margie have watched Reece more than once.”

“I’ve volunteered. So far, Daisy hasn’t asked.”

“The day will come. Don’t doubt it.”

They laughed, getting back to work.
