Several minutes passed before the door to the living room inched open. The door stood open, though no one appeared.

“Do you need help?” Beth asked.

They heard boots shuffling on the wood floor before the door was thrown wide. Nacho walked into the kitchen, a broad smile on his weathered face.

Chapter Fifteen

“Nacho!” Beth hurried to him, wrapping her arms around him for a hug. He smiled even through his grumbling about her action. Pulling back, her gaze swept over him. “You look wonderful. At least twenty years younger.”

“You have learned to lie while I was gone, eh, Chica?”

“Not at all. You look rested. What are you doing here?”

“It is a long story, and a sad one. I will not discuss it today. Who is this?” He nodded at Abigail.

“This is my assistant, Abigail Sawyer. Abbie, this is Nacho.”

“I’ve heard so much about you, Mr. Nacho. I’m glad I finally got the chance to meet you.”

“Just Nacho, Chica.”

Abigail moved to the coffee station. “Would you like coffee?”

He shook his head. “No coffee. Not unless you have tequila and cream?”

Beth smiled at him. “You know we don’t keep liquor in the kitchen. Except for special occasions. And I do believe this is one of them.” She nodded at Abigail to make him a cup. “Do you have bags with you?”

“They are in my car.”

Beth’s eyes grew wide. “You’re driving?”

“I have done many things since leaving here. You will be surprised.”

“I’m already surprised. Are you hungry?”

“No. I will sit down, though.” He walked to the table and chairs in the corner, lowering himself on a deep sigh. “I drove too far today.”

Beth sat down across from him. “Have you seen any of the Bonners, or Virgil?”

“Not yet. The lodge is quiet.” He glanced around as if assessing what was once his kitchen.

“You know that Wyatt and Daisy had a baby boy not long ago?”

“Yes. They mailed a picture to me.”

“They’re in town for a doctor’s visit. Anson and Margie went with them. They plan to eat dinner at the steakhouse. Virgil is around here somewhere. You’re going to be here for a while, right?”

“Sí, Chica.”

“Excellent. Virgil will know if there’s a cabin available. If not, one of the apartments in the back is open.”

“The apartment is fine.”

“Great. If you give me the keys, I’ll get your bags.”

He placed a hand over his heart, giving her an aggrieved stare. “No, Chica. I am still able to carry my own things. First, I will search for Virgil.”

Nacho nodded at Abigail before leaving through the kitchen door.
