“He wasn’t what I expected.”

Beth agreed. “He looks much better than when he left here to live with his brother. I wonder what happened to him.”

“Nacho?”

“His brother. He wasn’t well, which contributed to Nacho’s decision to leave the ranch. I hope his brother recovered.”

“But you’re thinking the opposite.”

Beth nodded. “Yes, I am.”

“What if he returned to get his job back?”

“Don’t worry about it, Abbie. If he did, then the Bonners will make room for him. It’s the way they are.”

“You’re sure?”

Beth couldn’t miss the worry in Abigail’s voice. “Absolutely.” In truth, she wasn’t sure at all. “Let’s get dinner started.”

“You’ve been avoiding me.”

Logan turned around to face Sam. The smile he saw didn’t fool him. Her assessment had been right.

“Sorry, Sam. I’ve been swamped.”

“Not swamped enough you couldn’t have sent a text.” It wasn’t a question.

He set aside the tool in his hand. “You’re right. I don’t have an excuse. Except…” He rubbed the back of his neck.

“Except, what?”

“Guess I’m still trying to figure out how to act. Or what to say when asked about the engagement.”

“I thought we already agreed on a plan.”

“We decided what to do once Miguel leaves town.” He shrugged. “But you’re right, Sam. I needed a few days to figure out what to do next.”

“That’s easy. We talk to each other and spend time together. We do it often enough for word to get back to Miguel that this is real. We’re the only ones who know it’s not.”

Seconds ticked by before Logan responded. Checking his watch, a grin formed. “It’s Friday. Are you up for pizza, Sam?”

“I’d love pizza.”

“Drive back to Whistle Rock and I’ll pick you up. Give me fifteen to clean up, and we’ll be on our way.”

“I’ll be waiting.”

Sam climbed into her truck, heading back home. She didn’t have to guess where they’d go. There were two places to get good pizza in Brilliance. One was takeout and delivery only. The second had inside tables, a few arcade games, and offered beer as well as soda and water. The ranch baseball team frequented the place the previous summer. Guest ranch duties and other projects this year made it impossible to field a team. Maybe next year.

Parking, her gaze landed on a figure she recognized. Her smile was immediate. Climbing out, she headed straight for Virgil and Nacho.

“Good to see you.” She held out her hand for him to shake. “Are you visiting or back for good?”

Accepting her hand, he shot a look at Virgil. “This one is sharp.”

“All the women are,” Virgil answered.

“I may stay a while, Chica. We will see.”
