“Logan just dropped me off.”

“How’s he doing?”

“Better. It was wonderful that his father, Quinn, and Abigail were there for the service.”

“Well, I’m glad you’re back.”

“What do you want me to do, Virgil?”

“We need someone to work inside the rebuilt barn. The windows are on order, as is the hardware we need for doors, and feeding bins for the stalls. The automatic waterers have been shipped. There’s still work that can be done until everything arrives. Check with Barrel.”

“Will do.” She started to walk off when Virgil called her name.

“You probably don’t know the latest.”

“Latest?”

“You remember Laurel Maddox?”

“Sure. She’s all right, isn’t she?”

“She’s fine. Someone broke into her shop and trashed the place. I heard the damage was extensive. Daisy said Laurel’s working with her insurance company to get the place fixed up.”

Sam couldn’t quite fathom someone wanting to destroy the shop. “Someone with a grudge against her?” she said out loud.

“Seems strange. The woman’s only been around Brilliance a short time. Aiden Winters is investigating.”

That must’ve gone over real well, she thought but didn’t say. “I’ll call her later. Maybe I can help her clean up. Thanks for letting me know.”

“Any leads on who did this?” Sam moved the mop and bucket behind the soda counter.

She’d shown up at the shop an hour earlier. A grateful Laurel had put her right to work vacuuming and mopping the floors.

“None. Deputy Winters has come by a few times to ask more questions, but that’s it.”

“Is he still asking about the fire?”

“Of course. The man is like a bloodhound. He’s picked up a scent and won’t give it up without the answers he wants. Unfortunately, I don’t have any answers.”

Sam rinsed out the mop to start again at the far end of the counter. “No other fires around town?”

Laurel stopped what she was doing to look at her. “No. Why do you ask?”

“It just seems odd that there’ve been two fires at Whistle Rock and none anywhere else. Don’t arsonists usually jump around?”

“I have no idea. You should pose the question to Deputy Winters.”

“Maybe I will.” Sam worked her way to the other end of the counter, rinsed out the mop, and looked around. “What else can I do to help?”

“All that’s left is to restock the soda fountain and gifts. Flowers are arriving tomorrow afternoon.”

“When is the grand opening?”

“The day after tomorrow.”

“I’ll stay here tomorrow night.”

Laurel stopped what she was doing. “Stay here?”
