“I’m in the same situation. We’re going somewhere real casual, right, Logan?” She looked up at him.

“Definitely casual.”

“Let me at least change my blouse and lock the back door. I’ll meet you back here in ten minutes.”

“Perfect.” Sam squeezed Logan’s hand. After Laurel left the room, she turned to face him. “I didn’t know we were going to dinner.”

“That was my plan when I came looking for you. I didn’t know Miguel was hanging around outside.”

“Wait. Miguel was outside Laurel’s shop?”

“He was. Looking inside. I thought it real strange.”

“And creepy.” Sam shivered at the image of Miguel peeking inside at her and Laurel.

“I thought the same. That may be why he reacted by pushing me.” He lifted their joined hands to kiss her knuckles. “It’s hard to see you married to the guy.”

She lifted one shoulder. “Young and dumb.”

Laurel joined them. “I’m ready. Where are we going?”

Chapter Twenty-One

“Let me read this back to you. One order each of Kung Pao chicken, broccoli beef, orange chicken, and shrimp fried rice.” The waitress smiled down at Logan, her interest clear.

“Plus, three sweet and sour soups.” Logan smiled back at the cute young woman with auburn curls, green eyes, and a much too bubbly personality for a Chinese restaurant. At least Sam thought so.

“Right. Three soups. Anything else?” The question was for all of them, though her attention continued to lock on Logan.

It would’ve irritated Sam if he hadn’t been holding her hand, squeezing it when the waitress’s smile widened.

“Nope. That’s it.” Logan tightened his hold on Sam’s hand.

When the waitress left, the entrance door opened. A lone man walked in and looked around. Without thought, Logan raised his hand in greeting.

“Hey, Aiden. Come and join us.”

Laurel’s jaw dropped at the same time Sam kicked Logan’s leg. He didn’t even react. She mouthedsorryat Laurel, pasting on a strained smile.

“Good evening.” Aiden looked at the booth, noting he’d be sitting next to Laurel. “Are you sure about joining you? I can find a spot somewhere else.”

“It’s fine,” Logan answered. “Laurel, would you mind?”

She shook her head without saying a word. Scooting over to let Aiden sit down, she left as much space between them as possible. Knowing Laurel’s opinion of the deputy, Sam felt bad for her.

“We’ve already ordered.” Logan itemized the menu items for him. “I’m sure there’ll be enough for you.”

“I don’t want to eat your food.” Aiden waved at the waitress, who came right over. “This will be on my tab, Izzy.”

She bestowed the same smile on him as Logan. “The usual spring rolls and shredded pork with garlic sauce?”

“Yes. And hot tea.”

“I’ll get the order right in and get your tea.”

“Thanks, Izzy.” He looked over at Laurel, then across the table at Logan and Sam. “I heard about your mother. That must be tough. Sorry, man.”

“Thanks. It was sudden. I spoke to her on the phone a few days earlier. She sounded fine. Sam drove over with me.” Logan nodded toward her. “We packed and cleaned up the place after the service for Mom.” When he didn’t continue, Sam jumped in.
