Virgil strode to her. “We need your help with the last demonstration. Meet the others in the large corral.”

“Will do. Is Wyatt around?”

“He’s doing paperwork inside his office. Do you need to talk with him?”

Reaching into her pocket, she pulled out the letter, handing it to him. “I just received this.”

Reading it, Virgil’s jaw clamped tight. He scanned it again before handing the letter back to Sam. “Your ex confessed to everything.”

“Yes.”

“You need to get this to Wyatt right away. He’ll want to contact the sheriff.”

“I know. Maybe they’ll be able to find him.”

Virgil offered a slow nod. “Maybe.”

Sam sat at a table with Brady and Jimmy French, listening to the band at Dulcy’s. Her plans had changed when Logan didn’t get back to her.

Maybe she should’ve talked to him in person. He’d want to know about Miguel, even if he had no desire to spend time with her.

“Here you are.” The waitress set down burgers in front of each of them. “Anything else?”

“Not for me,” Jimmy responded as she and Brady shook their heads. “I’m ready for this.” He picked up the burger, taking a big bite.

Sam watched as Brady did the same. She’d been hungry when they’d ordered. All she could do now was stare at her plate. The aroma of the grilled burger caused her stomach to rebel.

“Not going to eat?” Brady asked.

“I’m going to wait a bit.”

Sitting back, she looked around. The band was in the middle of a popular country song. Dancers crowded the floor. She could hear laughter from the bar, see smiles from customers at various tables. None of it affected her.

Between Miguel’s letter and not hearing from Logan, she found it hard to enjoy herself. Driving back to the ranch to read a book, or head straight to bed, appealed to her more than the crowded, noisy saloon.

Then her gaze landed on a table across the room. Her throat constricted. Logan nursed a beer. Beside him, Laurel Maddox did the same.

Chapter Twenty-Five

Logan just wanted to be alone. He had a lot to think about, preferring to do it in the chaotic action at Dulcy’s rather than the bleak silence of his cabin.

He felt bad about never responding to Sam. It was rude and unlike him to ignore her invitation. Something deep inside had him changing his mind each time he pulled out the phone.

Jake had come home with the news about Miguel, sharing it with Logan within minutes of exiting his truck. The information didn’t come as much of a surprise. He’d known Miguel would do anything to capture Sam’s attention. Hearing he’d set three fires and vandalized Laurel’s shop was extreme. He hoped Miguel would be found, arrested, and brought back to face trial. Logan wished he could be on that jury.

The beer he stared at had been in front of him for a while before he felt a tap on his shoulder. Closing his eyes a brief moment, he hoped it wasn’t a lovely lady wanting to dance. He would hate to turn her down.

Instead, he looked up to see Laurel Maddox. Shoving the chair back, he stood. “Good evening, Laurel.”

“Hello, Logan. Mind if I sit with you for a bit?”

“Not at all.” He pulled out a chair. “Are you here alone?”

“Just closed the store and wasn’t ready to go home.” Her chuckle held no humor. “Well, upstairs to my apartment, anyway.”

“Are you meeting someone?”

“No. It’s just me, which I don’t usually do. What about you? Is Sam coming?”
