She nodded as her gaze moved to the other side of the room for a second time. “Are you sure?’

Shifting, he followed her gaze to see Sam staring right back at him.

Logan didn’t remember standing, weaving his way between tables to stand next to her chair. “Hello, Sam.” He lifted his chin at Brady and Jimmy.

“Logan.”

“Having a good time?”

“Sure. You?”

“Not so much.”

“Really? I saw you with Laurel. You must be enjoying yourself a little, anyway.”

Logan’s gaze moved from Brady, to Jimmy, settling on Sam. “Do you have a few minutes to talk?”

“You didn’t return my text.”

“I can explain. Just a few minutes, Sam.”

“Go on, you two.” Jimmy grinned. “We’ll stay and watch the girls dance.”

Rising, she followed Logan outside. She leaned against the building, arms crossed. “Okay. Explain.”

Seconds ticked by in silence before he spoke. “It seemed so simple when Laurel encouraged me to talk to you.”

“What does Laurel have to do with anything?”

“She’s the one who said I should talk to you, let you know how I feel. It seemed simple…until now.”

“Just say it, Logan. Then we can go back inside to our separate tables.”

His nervous laugh was unexpected, though it did help relieve a little of the tension sparking between them.

“I heard about what Miguel did from Jake.”

“That’s what you wanted to talk about?”

“Well, no. It’s just with Miguel gone, we need to talk about our engagement.”

“The fake engagement, you mean?”

“It was fake at the start, Sam. Now,” he released a heavy breath, “I’m not sure what it is.”

“Over?”

“Not for me.” Closing the distance between them, he tugged her arms apart, slipping his fingers through hers. Seeing the wariness in her eyes, he found the courage to continue.

“I love you, Sam.”

She gasped, her eyes round with surprise.

“I don’t know when it happened. All I know for certain is it did. Instead of ending the engagement, I want to marry you.”

When she didn’t respond, he went on. “I know I’m younger than you, don’t have your experience in a relationship. I live in a tiny cabin, and don’t know much about what the future holds. What I do know is I want you in—”

He couldn’t continue with her arms wrapped tight enough around him to stop his speech. Enfolding her in his arms, he didn’t think he needed to say much more.
