“Is he awake?”

“Barely.”

“What happened?”

“The tractor tipped over while he was driving. How long before we can get in to see the doctor?”

“A few minutes. Does he have insurance?”

Logan reached into a pocket, tossing the man’s wallet on the desk. “It’s in there.”

While they waited, Doctor Mason Nagle walked out from the examination area. “Logan, right? Looks like your man needs our attention.”

“That he does.”

“Come on back.” Mason glanced at the female clerk, who let out a sigh but said nothing.

As the door closed behind them, Logan heard a familiar voice. Glancing through the slight slit in the curtains as he passed the first cubicle, he smiled. Sam stood next to a bed, holding the hand of a younger girl.

“We’ll put your man in here. What’s his name?”

“Earl.”

Placing him on the bed, Mason took a quick look at the injuries. “Earl, can you hear me?”

“Ye…yeah.” His voice was thin and weak. “We’ll need an X-ray. It appears your collarbone is broken. I believe your arm is all right, but you have a concussion.”

“Hmmm…”

Mason looked at Logan. “I’ll need you to wait in the front. As soon as I know the extent of his injuries, I’ll let you know.”

“Thanks, Doc. You’re in good hands, Earl.”

The ranch hand’s reply was a guttural groan.

Leaving the cubicle, he stopped outside the one where he’d spotted Sam. He heard her voice. Pulling the curtain back, he saw a nurse tending to the patient. Looking to her side, Sam saw him.

“Logan. What are you doing here?”

“The same as you. I brought in an injured ranch hand.”

“This is Jasmine. One of our guests. I’ll be back in a minute, Jasmine.”

The two moved to the waiting room. Neither sat down, believing they’d return to the emergency room.

“Who’s the girl?”

“A guest at the ranch.” Sam sent a quick look toward the emergency door. “Jasmine came with another family. She fainted during Virgil’s demonstration of what to expect on a trail ride. When I accompanied her back to the cabin, she confessed to fainting a few weeks ago.”

“Any reason?”

“That’s why we’re here. I hope Mason can find something that might be causing her to collapse.”

“What about the family?”

“The one who brought her to the ranch went to town today. They know nothing yet. Virgil’s deciding whether to tell them or call her parents. Jasmine mentioned her folks being on an extended vacation, which could make it hard.”

“Wait. Her parents sent her with others so they could go on vacation alone?”
