“Yes, unfortunately, we’re no closer to figuring out who this rat is.”
“Are my brothers in danger?”
“This sort of business isn’t a safe world, baby,” he said softly.
“Right. I know. I just . . .” she put her hand over her tummy.
“Hey, your brothers know what they’re doing.”
“I just wish they’d go completely clean. But I know that it would likely create more issues than it would solve.”
“Likely. Everything okay?”
She bit her lip.
“Uh-uh, come here.” He crooked a finger at her, and she moved over slowly. He turned, then lifted her onto his lap. Reaching up, he pulled her lip from her teeth. “None of that. What’s wrong? Are you upset because of what happened earlier?”
“What? No! Of course not. I, uh, wouldn’t mind some more of that.”
“I think we could arrange that. What’s wrong?”
“I’m already asking so much from you,” she told him. “It feels wrong to ask for more.”
“Asking so much from me? I wish that you were. What exactly do you ask from me?”
“Well, you have to stay here to be with me. Your life would be easier if you were back in New York.”
“But then I wouldn’t have you,” he replied. “How would that make my life easier? When all I’d want is to be back here with you? When I’d be worrying about you?”
“Really? You don’t mind?”
“Fuck, no, I don’t mind. What else?”
“Well, I can’t . . . I mean, you have to go slow when it comes to sex because . . .”
“You think I’m going to become upset because I need to be careful with you because you were terrorized? You think that little of me?”
“What? No, of course not, I mean, I don’t . . . Liam, I think you’re one of the best people I know.”
“You don’t know many people.”
“Hey, if I’m not allowed to put myself down, then neither are you,” she complained.
“Is that so?” he said with amusement. “All right. You still haven’t asked me for what you need.”
“I wasn’t going to say anything, but Nico said I should. I just wondered if one night you could stay home. With us.”
“You want me to stay home with you?”
“Well, yes, of course. I mean, we spend lots of time together and everything, it’s just, at night, sometimes I miss you.”
“Then I’ll arrange to spend more nights with you.”
“I don’t want to be a nuisance.”
“Little girl, are you asking for a spanking?” he growled.
“What? No!” She scrambled off his lap, her hands going behind her butt. “Not me. No way. Uh-uh.”
