She shifted on her feet, lowering her voice. “Maybe it’s just a mismatch of us on a physical level?”

He swallowed. “You felt that, too?”

“Well, you obviously felt it,” she snapped.

“No, there’s nothing wrong with you.”

“Oh, thank you for that!”

He sighed.

She cringed.

“Not here,” he said again.

“I’m just saying, maybe that’s all we should say,” she said with a shrug.

“Maybe it’s me,” he said, chagrined. “Maybe there’s something wrong with me.”

“No!” she said. Only, yes, maybe, yes. He was just, well, hopelessly bad at sex. He was rough and awkward and he did that thing she hated which was to stop doing a thing entirely if she tried to give him some tips on how better to please her. It was really disappointing, too, because they were such good friends and they got along so well and she had sort of hoped that sex between them would be effortless. “Just… we don’t mesh.”

He let out a breath. “Yeah. We don’t mesh.”

“And we tried. It was only natural we’d try. We’re friends, and we’re both attractive, red-blooded people who want to find love, and so, we had to try. But, you know, didn’t work, so…”

“Right,” he said.

“Okay, well, see you Monday.” She sat down at her desk.

He lingered, rubbing the back of his neck. “I really think we should—”

“Nope,” she said.

“But it’s awkward.”

“We’ll get past it.” She was not looking at him.

“You avoided me all day,” he said.

“Didn’t,” she sang.

“I can tell when you’re lying to me, you know,” he said.

“I was not avoiding you,” she said, jiggling the mouse and staring at the computer screen. “I was avoiding this conversation. And it’s still happening. Can it stop, please?”

“So, we’re good, then?”

She looked up at him, smiling a very big, very reassuring smile. “Totally. Totally good. We’re still, you know, us. Just… now we’ve seen each other naked. It’ll be funny. At some point.”

He forced out a laugh.

She forced one out, too.

He hesitated. “Okay, okay. I get it. You don’t want to talk about it.”

“There’s nothing to talk about.”

He licked his lips. He took a breath, as if he was about to speak.
