“Does your sister know you’re breaking into people’s houses now?”

“Leave Eloise out of it,” said Kevin, rolling his eyes. “And I’m not breaking into anything. I’m just looking for Hollis.”

“You know Hollis.”

“It’s Shepherdstown. Everyone knows everyone,” said Kevin. “Why are you in here?”

“Well, we’re looking for him too.” Essence held up her hand with the handcuffs on it.

“Whoa,” said Kevin.

“We’re thinking maybe he can get them off,” said Essence. “He was supposed to be here, looking for some way to do that.”

“Can I?” said Kevin reaching for the chain.

“Sure,” said Essence.

Kevin wrapped a hand around it. His eyes closed and his body seemed to blur for a moment. Then he let go. “That’s some kind of magic,” he breathed. “It feels…it’s not fae.”

“No?” said Essence, rubbing her wrist beneath it. “What is it?”

“I’ve never felt anything quite like it,” said Kevin. “I think… I might be able to break it.”

“Seriously?” said Decker. “Uh, by the way, my name’s Decker, not that anyone here could have introduced me or anything.”

“Sorry,” said Essence.

“I’m Kevin,” said Kevin, who was still looking at the chain that held them together. “But I’m afraid that if I brute-force the spell, it might have unforeseen consequences.”

“Like what?” said Essence.

“I don’t know,” said Kevin. “That’s why they’d be unforeseen. There’s just a hint of something in there, something nasty.”

“Great,” said Essence. “Maybe we’re in danger or something. Maybe these cuffs are going to kill us.”

“I mean, we’re all dying,” said Kevin. “Growth is death.”

“What a cheery thought,” said Decker dryly.

Kevin shrugged. “Here all night, folks.” But he turned towards the door, as if he was getting ready to go.

“Going somewhere?” said Essence.

“Yeah, to look for Hollis,” said Kevin, turning back towards her.

“Well, we’re looking for him, too,” said Essence.

Kevin furrowed his brow. “Hey, what happened to your neck?”

She covered it, feeling heat rush to her face. Beside her, she felt Decker jerk on the chains of the handcuffs as he went stiff. “Nothing.”

Kevin held her gaze for a few moments, expressionless. “All right.” Then he turned around again. He paused for a moment and then just started walking toward the door.

Essence turned to Decker, who wasn’t looking at her.

Kevin went through the front door, shutting it behind him.

“We should follow him,” said Essence.
