“Our plan?” she asked. “It won’t work now?”

He shook his head.

“Fletch.” Michelle reached for his arm. “I trust you. I don’t know who else to trust.”

His Adam’s apple bobbed. “Fuck.” Silence prevailed as Fletch battled a war Michelle couldn’t see. Finally, he sighed and reached for Michelle’s hand. “It goes against everything I do and everything I’m supposed to do, but for once I want and I can’t resist. Shelly” —his eyes opened wide— “come with me.”

“With you? Where?”

“You can do the work of your parents.”

Michelle tried to see beyond the truck windows, yet the inside of the cab was too intense to leave even in thought. “What work?”

“I can’t tell you. Not yet.” His lips curled. “All I can ask is that you trust me.” He loosened his hold of her hand, laying his palm upward.

It only took a second before she closed her fingers around his hand. “I trust you.”

His smile shone in his black eyes as his fingers encased hers. “Then we’re in this together.”

It wasn’t a question, and Michelle wasn’t sure what this was, but at the moment, her decision felt right. Everything within her said that one day she would understand. Fletch would help her. And her fear of flames would be gone.

“We are,” she said.

He smiled her direction. “You’ll be able to trust my partner. I promise.”

“Who is your partner?”

“Another man who no longer exists.” Fletch pulled the truck back out onto the street. At the first opportunity, he turned around and headed for I-70. They headed toward the West Coast.

If Michelle was going to submit to the flames, at least, for once, she wasn’t doing it alone. Through it all, they’d be together.

PROLOGUE

PATRICK

Current Day

Looking around the room, it was still unbelievable to me that this was my family. I watched as my sons—Darragh, Rian, Rory, Declan—and my daughter, Siobhan, laughed and teased their cousins, our friends, and other family members. My brothers—Sean and Cormac—were there with their wives and children. It was hard to believe forty years had passed since I took over as the head of the O’Sheeran family here in America and found my beautiful wife, Maeve.

I tightened my hold around her waist. She smiled up at me. The love she still had for me, even after forty years of marriage, shone from her eyes. I knew mine was visible for all to see, too. She’d been a miracle I hadn’t even known I needed or wanted- a temptation that led to a wonderful, fulfilled, and love-filled life.

Back then, I was busy living the dream of power, money, and women, and no desire was outside my reach. I’d been high on it all and thought I had everything. Even my mam, mom, had been pushing me to ensure the family line by marrying and producing children, but I’d ignored her. I had brothers who could carry on the family name. I didn’t need to have children or a wife.

As I gazed around our fortieth wedding anniversary party and thought of all that had happened since then, my mind went back to the day I met mo anamchara, my soulmate. Some might say it was luck. I know it was fate, along with some magic.
