I shook my head. I didn’t want to leave this moment.

“It’s time to go home.”

Cold. I turned to face him as he stepped away and waited for me to follow. Splashed with the reality that the moment was over, I knew I had no other choice.

“Find your own ride, I’m staying in Austin for the night.” I kept my face straight as I moved off the dance floor and glanced around to find the others.

A hand wrapped around my wrist. “They’re gone, Betty.”

My shoulders dropped slightly. “Good for them.”

“Your brother went to visit June.” His response didn’t surprise me. Of course, Steven wanted to get back together with his ex again. “Dorothy took Howard to get food somewhere.” Not surprising either; there was a great cafe a few blocks away that was open twenty-four seven.

“Tacos sounds out of sight.” He released his hand from me. I turned to face him. “Do you want to grab food too?”

“Uh. Okay.” Dean didn’t look sure, but he followed me out of the room, down the stairs, and outside.

His steps were right next to mine as we walked across a crosswalk and then turned to go down another sidewalk. He moved behind me to walk alongside the road, his hand gently pressed to the small of my back. “Where is this place?”

“Just around the corner. Stone’s Cafe is small, but they have the best breakfast tacos.”

“What’s a breakfast taco?”

I glanced at him. “Oh, I am so ordering for you.” I couldn’t help the grin that spread across my face as we rounded the corner and walked into Stone’s Cafe.

“Anything you want.” He chuckled as he followed me in.

I walked straight up to the counter where Stone, the owner, was reading the paper. He glanced up when he saw me approach.

“Betty, I was wondering where you were when your friend came in an hour ago.” He chuckled and looked over to the corner booth where Dorothy and Howard were laughing about something.

“I was at the Roof.”

“Of course. What can I get you two?” Stone looked from me to Dean.

“Four potato, bacon, and sausage with two sides of hash, an extra plate of bacon, and all the coffee.”

“You got it, darling.” Stone wrote it down and moved to the little register.

“I’ve got it.” Dean spoke up behind me as he pulled out his wallet.

I laughed and pulled some change out of my pocket. “I can pay my way.”

“I never said you couldn’t. Please let me.”

“Dean.”

“If I don’t like it, you can pay me back.”

“Fine.” I crossed my arms as Dean paid for our food then we walked over to the others.

The others greeted us as I rolled my eyes before Dorothy glanced up and smiled. “Hey. I figured you’d find me.” I nodded and slid into the booth.

Dean sat down next to me, moving closer than probably necessary.

“Where’s Steven?” Howard questioned.

“June,” Dean and I answered at the same time.
