CHAPTER FIVE

SLOANE

Ben is attractive with his blond hair and blue eyes. I made a promise to myself years ago to never get involved with a football player, especially one my sperm donor likes. He smiles at me.

“What position?” he asks, interested as he leans forward in his chair. The smell of his cologne is a woodsy and citrusy scent. It smells heavenly.

“Goalie. Can we get back to studying? I made some notes on your notes. I don’t know your professor but a friend of mine had him last year and he loves to focus on dates and notes in the back of the book. I’ll see if she still has her notes from the class.”

“Thanks. I appreciate that.” The lights flicker, showing the library is getting ready to close. “Can I have your number, so we don’t have to go through Coach?”

“Sure, or you can have my email. I’m always checking that too.” I smile at him. He hands me his phone and I type in my name; phone number and email then hand it back to him.

“Tutor girl? Are you a One Tree Hill fan?” His eyebrow arches as he stares at me.

“You know who tutor girl is?” I’m dumbfounded. When I made a reference to clothes over bros before he didn’t get the reference.

“Sister loved the show. We actually have a weekly two-episode video chat to watch together.” His face reddens with I can only assume embarrassment.

“Your secret is safe with me,” I say as we walk out of the library together. “Let me know what your schedule is like so we can set up some more study time. Hopefully I’ll have the notes from my friend to help as well. She’s a pack rat so she should have them.” He nods. “With hockey and football season going on it’s going to be hit or miss. We could be studying over video chat while on the road.”

“Thank you. Coach made it seem like you were cool with this idea, but you don’t seem happy.”

“First things first, don’t talk to me about Coach. You may think he is a God among men, but I don’t. My relationship with the sperm donor is off limits. Second thing, he’s holding a trip over my head to tutor you so don’t think I’m doing this out of the goodness of my heart. I can’t stand football players except for my three half-brothers, of course, and he knows it. We are not friends, and we will never be friends. Let me know how the test goes on Thursday or if we need to study before then. I’ll try to move things around but I have a game tomorrow, so I’ll be too busy.”

“Got it, tutor girl.” I begin to walk away from him, but his voice catches me off guard.

“You know what happened to the tutor girl and the basketball player she tutored? She hated him too.” He shrugs before walking off and I shake my head. This boy is going to be the death of me.

The next week flies by with tutoring, hockey, schoolwork for myself and family dinners. Dad is being nicer to me, and I don’t like it. It’s all fake to me. He’s dangling a trip in front of me to get him to do things for him, it’s not right. I spend a lot of sleepless nights replaying my interactions with my dad.

The first college football game is this Saturday and we’re all going. My brothers want me to sit with them, but I want to sit in the student section to keep those who don’t know about the coach and me in the dark. I promise William to sit with him at the beginning of the game and by halftime with my friends. It’s the best I can do.

Ben:

Are you at the game?

I took a picture of my two brothers and myself then send it to him.

Ben:

Awesome. Gonna cheer for me?

Me:

Nope.

Ben:

Tutor girl breaking my heart already

Me:

Do you even have a heart asshat?

Ben:

I do. Your brother is reading over my shoulder and told me to tell you to stop flirting with me.
