His place is secure.

But what about mine?

Do I want this? A life full of uncertainty and violence? I thought I did, because this life, this family is all I’ve ever known. Now that I’ve had a… taste of what my future might hold, though, I’m not sure I’m made for it.

How many long nights lie ahead of me? Waiting for him to come home, like my mother waits for my father, only to have him walking through the door smelling of gunpowder and blood?

Will him kissing me and lighting my body on fire be enough to make me stay?

Is that why my mother stays?

What if I’m not strong enough like her? What if I’m not cut out for this?

What if I want safety, security, and mediocrity?

Something crashes to the floor and Adam’s hard arms squeeze protectively around me. I cling to him, my heart racing, until I hear one of the dinner staff muttering and cursing.

Squirming in Adam’s hold, I push gently at his chest, but his arms refuse to release me.

“We should join the family before we’re missed…” I insist.

They could already be looking for us, and I don’t even want to think about them finding us like this.

Adam takes a deep breath in, his nose pushing through my hair, then sighs.

Finally releasing me, he rubs his hands up and down my arms, then takes my hand with a thoughtful expression on his face.

His fingers slip through my fingers and his voice becomes wistful, thinking of the future he has planned for us. “One day, I’ll never have to let you go until I want to let you go.”

Lifting my hand to his mouth, he brushes his lips across my knuckles, and another jolt of sensation zips through me. “Everyone will recognize and accept that you’re mine.”

An hour ago, I would have been thrilled to hear him say such. To have him looking down at me with blazing eyes and mean it.

But now, with his kiss tingling like a brand on my hand, that future is beginning to terrify me…
