I lifted my head and looked squarely at him, unblinking. “I said I want to go back to work.”

His eyes narrowed. “Don’t you understand how dangerous that is?” he asked slowly.

“You promised us weekly shows here. We haven’t done that!”

“That’s because you left, remember? Do you still have a cast of dancers willing to put on weekly shows?”

My irritability mounted. “Maybe if I were regularly at Maximo’s, I would have a cast!” I fired back.

“You would put yourself and the baby at risk because you’re impatient?”

“It’s not impatience, Nyx! It’s… it’s so much worse than that!”

“It doesn’t change the fact that it’s dangerous!” he snapped, his own patience expiring.

“With all the guards around?” I insisted. “They would have to be fools to try anything.”

“Someone put ebonleaf in your food under my nose,” he reminded me. “As much as I trust the Royal Guards, I’m not convinced it won’t happen again.”

“It was a one-off, a fluke. We’re cautious now?—”

“The matter is settled, Maren.” His voice was sharper than I’d ever heard it used with me. “For the safety of our child, you’ll stay here until we can figure out what’s going on.”

He reached for me, but I shrugged him off, angered by his condescending manner. Did he really believe he could just wrap me in his arms and make it all better?

It was my own fault for always making him believe that it was, though.

“I think I’m going to sleep in one of the spare rooms,” I muttered, spinning around to leave.

“What?!” he choked, ire lacing his question. “Don’t be childish, Maren.”

Furious, I whipped back to face him, my cheeks flaming. “Childish? You think my mental health is a joke?”

Without waiting for him to respond, I stormed out of the bedroom, leaving the door open, and locked myself in one of the spare rooms, waiting for him to come and concede that he was the one being irrational.

But the knock on the door never came, even as the hours passed and night fell over the Kingdom of Steelshire.

I truly was alone there now. It was just me and the baby growing slowly inside me.

Chapter 6

Nyx

Incensed, I paced outside of the closed bedroom door like a lion on the prowl, but I didn’t bust in like I wanted to do. Oh, and I wanted to so badly.

What the hell has gotten into her?I thought angrily. I suddenly realized that the guards were watching my erratic movements and stomped back to the main bedroom, slamming without touching it, my magic reverberating throughout the castle. My head pounded in the aftermath of our argument.

Why is she being so unreasonable? Can’t she see that this is what’s safest?

Less than half a minute later, my nose began to tickle.

“What’s going on up here?” Odette asked, materializing in a cloud of pewter.

I sneezed once, and she cringed, backing up, waving her hands in her face. I glowered at the enchantress, furious that she had arrived without warning.

“Go away. I didn’t send for you,” I grumbled.

“I thought we were having an earthquake,” she retorted. “You shook the whole castle with your door slam. Why are you being so loud?”
