“I won’t delve into the intricacies of politics with you, sir, because frankly, I’m not sure I understand them. However, you must know that in the past five years, almost every one of theoldministers has either stepped down, been fired, retired, or—sadly—passed on.” I was sure to emphasize ‘old.’ “With that change came an influx of new government, younger faces, more open minds.”

Understanding began to fill his face. “Are you saying that the old ministers were blocking the cash flow?”

“Every government works in tandem with its advisors,” I intoned, almost like I was reading a script. I had endured this conversation before. “And when Nyx received his full power, that’s when things changed.”

Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Jessup beginning to throw a temper tantrum, and the governess looked flustered.

“Excuse me. One of my sons is having something of a sugar crash.”

Gracefully, I glided off, but before I could intercede, a cloud of teal smoke and a voracious tickling of my nose announced Ayan’s presence at the party.

She scooped up my son as he threw his head back, prepared to release a howl to shatter the greenhouses, and whispered something in his ear. Immediately, Jessup’s golden eyes brightened, and he closed his mouth as our enchantress dropped him easily back to his feet and turned to us.

“Pardon me for interrupting your festivities, Luna,” she told me, her face vaguely grave. Her aquamarine eyes were shadowed darker than I’d ever seen before, and my stomach dropped.

“You’re always welcomed at our parties, Ayan,” I replied with an easy chuckle, but she didn’t smile.

“I need to have a private word with you and the king, please. It’s quite important.”

My stomach dropped, a million terrible memories flooding me in a torrent. Immediately, my eyes scanned the room for Lucian and Jessup again, but the enchantress gently touched my arm reassuringly.

“It’s not about the children, Luna.”

I exhaled.

“It’s not life threatening in any way,” she continued. “But it does need to be addressed.”

I nodded, pursing my lips together, and headed across the room toward my husband.

“I’m sorry to interrupt,” I told his company. “But this is a matter of urgency.”

Nyx’s face shadowed as quickly as mine, his hand curling into my palm as I led him back toward the changerooms at the rear of the school.

“Ayan, what is it?” Nyx demanded, his voice curt and coarse.

“I’ll cut right to it, Alpha, because it’s not fair to drag it out,” the enchantress said frankly, producing an envelope from seemingly nowhere.

“What is that?”

She inhaled deeply as we stared at her. “This was delivered today by an attorney from Katyne. He hand-delivered it, flew across two continents to ensure that you got it, Alpha. He wouldn’t leave it with the guards. In fact, he wanted to wait but settled for leaving it with me.”

I shuddered involuntarily, imagining what would have happened if Odette had still been our enchantress and such an important document had come into the castle.

“He flew from two continents over?” Nyx asked dubiously. “This sounds like a scam of sorts, Ayan…”

“It’s not, Alpha. I had him verified. He is who he said he is, and it was important that he deliver the message personally… to you.”

My stomach flipped as she handed him the letter, an inkling of what it might be encompassing me. A part of me wanted to tell Nyx not to open it, to burn it, to leave it alone. We had gone this long without ever knowing the truth.

But it was too late. The envelope was open, and my mate was scanning the words on the page as Ayan looked at me. I dropped my head and began to shake it.

“Oh… this can’t be.”

“I’m sorry, Alpha,” Ayan sighed.

Disgusted, Nyx threw the page on the floor and spun around.

“Nyx!” I called out after him, but he held up a hand.
