Odette sniffed and snorted. “Is there really any difference, dear?” she retorted condescendingly, cutting Tristiana off.

I put a hand on my friend’s arm before she could really lose it.

“Both professions are respectable, but we can have that discussion another time. We’re expecting two more faeries,” Tristiana growled instead.

“Of course you are,” Odette sighed in annoyance. “Are they going to need special attention, or can they figure it out?”

“I’m sure we can manage without you if you have somewhere else to be,” Tristiana told her with just as much frigidness.

“Great!”

“Odette?” I squeaked out timidly before she could rush off.

She glowered at me, her angry eyes hypnotic and terrifying. “Yes?”

“Where is the king?”

Her eyes narrowed slightly. “He’ll be around. He’s a busy soul, you know? Some faeries have to do real work for a living.”

With that, she was off in a cloud of pewter smoke, the fumes overwhelming me as she disappeared.

“What a bitch,” Tristiana muttered, shaking her head as she glided toward the open doors of the room.

“Shh!” I begged my friend. “Don’t say that. She could still hear us. You know that enchantresses can linger around without being seen.”

“Trust me. She couldn’t wait to get out of here.” Tristiana stopped in the doorway, shaking her head. “And how are we supposed to work in this?” she demanded, gesturing at the cramped room in disgust. It was filled with boxes and brokenfurniture. There was barely enough floor space to walk, let alone dance.

“You obviously can’t.” We both spun around at the male voice behind us, and relief flooded through me to see Nyx at our back.

“Hi!” I choked, my shoulders sagging. I almost threw my arms around him, but I checked myself before I could make a fool out of myself in front of Tristiana.

His broad smile and twinkling eyes told me that he had the same impulse, causing my heart to race.

“Hello. Thanks for coming. Hi, Tristiana.”

“Hey, Alpha,” she greeted him casually, as if she met the king every day.

I had to admire my friend’s unyielding confidence. I wish I shared it.

“Come this way. I’ll take you to the theater. I have no idea why Odette would think to put you in here,” Nyx said, shaking his head. “We must have gotten our lines crossed.”

I was sure that wasn’t what happened.

He started down the hall, and we followed, Nyx falling into step with us. I walked in the middle, flanked by my best friend and the king.

“The ministers and the other guests will be here at eight o’clock. I trust that will give you enough time to practice and prepare?” he asked cordially.

Through my peripheral vision, I noticed the Royal Guards walking behind us, too close for comfort, particularly when Nyx’s hand kept brushing against mine.

Was he doing that intentionally?

“We’ve already rehearsed,” Tristiana informed him. “We just need to set up. It’s plenty of time.”

“I’d like this to be a weekly event,” Nyx explained. “I don’t know if you can commit to that, Tristiana.”

She glanced at me. “Has Maren already agreed to that?”

Blushing again, I shrugged. “We haven’t exactly discussed all the details.”
