“You’re mine,” I thought he said, but I was gone, floating away in my endless orgasms, clutching to Nyx as if he were going to slip out of my fingers any moment.

His explosion was larger than the last one, scalding and rich, filling me as I collapsed in his arms. He stroked my back and hair, his breath unsteady as our bodies melded.

“I’ve got you, Little Muse,” he mumbled and said it again. “You’re mine.”

Gooseflesh broke out over my entire body as I lifted my head to look at him curiously.

Don’t ask him. Don’t ruin the moment!a little voice screamed in my head, but I had to do it. Knowing I had genuine feelings for the king, I couldn’t go on like this.

“What are you saying, Nyx?” I whispered. “What does that mean?”

He stared at me for a long moment, his gorgeous eyes unreadable.

“It means what I said,” he replied after what felt like an hour. “You’re mine.”

Chapter 9

Maren

Icontinued to stare at him blankly until he pulled me back into a hug that crashed us both onto the sofa. Laying side by side, he brushed stray strands of hair out of my face and studied my confused but hopeful expression.

“How happy are you here?” he asked.

“Here? In your arms?”

He chuckled and shrugged with his one able shoulder. “Sure. That, too,” he agreed.

“I’m very happy, here in this moment,” I babbled, unsure of what he was really asking. “It doesn’t feel real.”

“It’s real,” he reassured me. “And it should be more real. What I was asking is, how happy are you here, in this apartment?”

“Oh…” Embarrassed, I looked away, but he pulled my chin back toward him.

“I want you to move into the castle with me.”

My jaw dropped, and I blinked, stunned by the unexpected ask. “You… you want me to move in with you?”

Nyx stroked my face tenderly, his gaze never straying from my face. “You would have your own suite, but that suite will be bigger than this apartment, I promise… and in better condition—not that you don’t keep an excellent house. It’s not your fault that the landlords don’t fix what they’re supposed to fix.”

Anger shadowed his eyes briefly, but faded as he remembered where he was and what we were doing. “I want you to live the kind of life you deserve, Maren. I can do better by you if you let me.”

I swallowed the lump forming in my throat. I had no idea how to respond to this. It was true that my place left a lot to be desired, but it was all I could afford. I had aspired to upgrade my living conditions if the cabaret shows at the castle became a sure thing, but that was some time away.

“We’ve already raised so much money together to help those who need it—and that’s in one meeting of the minds. Imagine what we could do if we were like this together, every night, bouncing ideas off one another.”

Oh, he did spin a beautiful picture, appealing to every part of me that needed appealing… except perhaps my inherent need to be free.

“Why wouldn’t you come and stay?” he pressed, sensing my hesitation.

“I don’t exactly blend in with the furnishings at the castle,” I reminded him nervously, pulling myself out of his arms to sit up. He rose with me, placing his hands over my bare shoulders.

“That is true. You were by far the most beautiful piece of art in Steelshire Castle the other night. We’ll see what we can do to keep up with you.”

I eyed him over my shoulder, my body relaxing as he massaged my tensing muscles.

“Didn’t I promise to protect you?” Nyx whispered in my ear. “I will take care of you, Maren… if you let me.”

I closed my eyes, his hot breath washing over me and sweeping away all of my resolve with it. But why was I having second thoughts at all?
