We remained in South Havenmire, winding through the downtown core, past the financial district.

“That’s the cabinet building,” he pointed out as we drove past, and I nodded. Everyone knew the building, of course. “So if you ever need me during the day, you know where to find me.”

I eyed him dubiously.

He couldn’t possibly believe that I’d come and interrupt him during his meetings.

The back of Maximo’s came and went. I glanced at him, gauging his reaction to the building, but his face remained stoically content.

Should I bring up work right now?

It didn’t feel like the right time, not when he looked so excited about whatever he had planned for us. And frankly, I didn’t want to come down from this high I was on, either.

Work could wait.

He did own the club, after all. It wasn’t like my job was going anywhere.

The fashion district came into view, and the SUV slowed, the driver partially turning his head toward us. “Where should I park, Alpha?”

“That’s an excellent question.” Nyx turned to me. “Where would you like to start?”

I stared at him blankly, still not understanding.

“Start what?” I replied, shooting a look at the too-expensive shop windows. Overdressed women walked dogs in fancier clothes than I owned.

“Your shopping, of course,” the king laughed. “We’re getting you a whole new wardrobe. So, pick a store, and we’ll go from there.”

The driver continued to circle the avenue as I stared in awe at the upscale signages, not daring to believe that the fantasy continued.

“I… I can’t afford anything here,” I stuttered, knowing exactly he had no intention of letting me pay.

“But I can,” he informed me, brushing his lips against my cheek. “We’re building a whole new branch of the kingdom together. Now tell the driver where to stop so we can start. I can’t wait to see you in an evening gown.”

Chapter 10

Nyx

Watching Maren gave me more pleasure than I could ever imagine being possible. Shopping was never a task I particularly enjoyed, but with her, it didn’t feel like a chore in the least.

She seemed so unaware of how beautiful she was, modeling the endless line of dresses, skirts, blouses, and pants I had the shop workers bring out. Her cheeks pinkened as she put on heels and flats, prancing around the various stores until the guards and drivers were fully loaded down with bags.

I could have watched her all day long, my mind slightly heady from the glasses of champagne poured freely throughout the high-class shops on the avenue, but Maren was exhausted as the afternoon sun started to slip from its noon point behind the pristine, whitewashed buildings of the fashion district.

Everyone stopped in their tracks to see me walking so freely down the street with my guards and beautiful companion, pride brimming over my face as we glided past the suits and dresses and passersby snapped pictures on their phones.

“Oh, we need to stop here,” I urged, tugging on Maren’s hand.

“Nyx, no,” she whispered, her eyes darting around warily. “I have enough stuff.”

“One more stop,” I insisted, ushering her through the revolving doors.

Light jazzy music filled my ears as I led Maren inside, and every worker stopped in their tracks, jaws dropping when they saw me.

“Alpha!” a pert blonde fae cried, rushing toward me. I frowned at her familiarity, but I couldn’t place her. She smiled happily. “How nice to see you here.”

“Can you help my Little Muse find whatever her heart desires?” I asked, gesturing for the guards to wait outside. It wasn’t appropriate for them to be inside this shop, despite their desire to protect me. Their big, burly statures among the dainty lace and silk were questionable.

She turned to Maren, extending her smile, but Maren’s hazel gaze flickered over the lace and silk displays, another blush filling her cheeks when she realized where she was.
