“Is she in there?” I asked unnecessarily.

“Yes, Alpha,” Drakias replied, his eyes darting toward me and back forward professionally.

My eyes narrowed.

“Did she have a good day?” I pressed.

“I couldn’t say, Alpha.”

I wasn’t sure I liked that answer. “What the hell does that mean?”

“She had a visitor today,” he offered. “One of the dancers. And she went out to the market.”

“Right. They were doing rehearsals,” I remember.

“The fae didn’t stay.”

My blood chilled at the revelation. “Why not?” I demanded. “What happened?”

“I couldn’t say, Alpha. They spoke privately in Miss Maren’s suite, and a few minutes later, the fae left. She seemed upset and went out for a jog.”

I didn’t pepper him with any other questions and instead knocked on the door. “Maren? Are you in there?”

A strong urge compelled me to bust in and see what was going on, but I restrained myself. This wasn’t a servant or guard. This was someone far more special to me. She was entitled to her privacy.

“Maren!” The door opened a few seconds later, and her drawn face constricted my chest. “What happened?” I asked, striding into the front room.

She glanced at Drakias, but he was already looking forward as if he’d heard nothing.

“Ask him,” she muttered, sounding distinctly bitter as she closed the door behind us.

“I did ask him, and he told me that Tristiana came to see you today. Did she upset you?”

Maren chuckled mirthlessly, ambling toward the chaise lounge where she flopped down, the hem of her gray dress flopping with the movement. Despite her clear upset, she still looked beautiful, the garment flattering to her perfect figure, accenting every curve of her body. I was instantly hard looking at her, but I didn’t dare try to touch her like that.

“This was a bad idea,” she said, and I paled.

Sitting at her side, I tried to reach for her hand, but she held hers together firmly in her lap.

“What? What was a bad idea? You and me?”

Her head jerked up, and her chin quivered slightly. “I don’t think that was a bad idea. I mean… I don’t understand what you see in me.”

“Oh, Maren,” I groaned. “Please, don’t start with this again. I haven’t stopped thinking about you all day. I was rushing to get home so I could see you.”

“I can’t stay here, Nyx.”

I stopped speaking, my mouth still agape. She spoke so quietly but firmly, the tone leaving no room for argument.

“What?”

“I’m sorry. You’ve done so much for me, but it’s… it’s not a good fit.”

“What the hell does that mean?” I growled. “We’re not a good fit?”

“No!” She sighed and buried her face in her hands. “You are the only thing that keeps me going, too, but this place… I don’t fit in here. It’s obvious.”

My eyebrows knitted into a vee, and I leaned toward her. “Who is giving you problems? I’ll have them fired immediately! Has Odette said something to you?”
