Maren gasped, falling to the chair across from me. “Why didn’t you tell me that?” she demanded, tears welling in her eyes. “Why did you let me think…?”

“Why did you think it in the first place?” I retorted angrily. “I thought you knew me better than that!”

“I…” She dropped her head shamefully, and I was immediately contrite, but I didn’t say it. Instead, I reached for her hand and brought it to my lips.

“I would have told you,” I added. “If you hadn’t been so determined to get me out of your life.”

“I didn’t want you out of my life,” she sniffed. “But it’s all so complicated!”

The tears began to fall down her cheeks, and I dropped out of the chair to my knees to wipe them away.

“It doesn’t have to be,” I promised her. “We were making it work, weren’t we?”

Maren dropped her head to mine, and I pushed my forehead to hers. “Come on,” I pressed. “Let’s get you fed before this gets cold.”

Untangling myself from her fingers, I rose to find her a plate.

“Is that why you came here? To tell me the truth?”

Glad that my back was facing her, I grimaced, unsure if I should proceed.

Odette is wrong about her. I’ve never been more sure of anything. She’s as pure as the driven snow, and I am willing to bet my life on it. I’m not questioning her.

“Yes,” I fibbed. “That’s why.”

Her hands encircled my waist, and I grabbed onto her arms, relief sweeping over me. I’d wanted to feel her warm body against me for so long, I already felt myself growing hard. She felt slightly different to me, her body fleshier, hotter. It turned me on more.

Whirling around, I yanked her fully into my arms, ensuring she could read the depth of my concern for her in my eyes—and feel the full bulge of my readiness for her.

“I have missed you so much,” I told her honestly.

She tipped her head back to meet my gaze, and I saw the love she still had for me locked inside. But there was something else in the depth of her eyes, something forlorn.

“What is it, Maren?” I murmured, brushing a stray strand of hair out of her face. “Why do you look so lost?”

As she always did when I had her in my sight, she tried to look away, but I held her firm, ready for her aversion. She trembled slightly.

“I…” She breathed uncertainly. “I…”

“You can tell me anything, Maren,” I vowed. “I will always love you, no matter what you tell me. I’m here for you.”

Her eyes popped at the confession, a pink hue overtaking her face. “You love me?” she whispered.

“Does that surprise you?” I growled, lowering my lips to her forehead. “How could anyone not love you?”

She relaxed in my arms but tensed again. “Nyx… I’m pregnant.”

The words caught me off guard entirely, but my reaction was immediate and genuine. A wide, amazed smile formed over my lips, eyes still boring into her pretty hazel irises.

“You’re pregnant,” I rasped. “We’re going to have a baby!”

Kisses rained over her face and neck as she squeaked lightly, her arms tightening around me.

“You’re happy about this?” she asked, dumbfounded.

I stopped my avalanche of kisses to look at her again. “Did you think I wouldn’t be?”

“I didn’t think you’d be thrilled.”
