Sighing, he put his hand behind his neck and pressed on his tense muscles. Tension had been building in his upper back and shoulders since he heard the news.

It was now a constant dull ache. He couldn’t imagine who would betray him…them!

“No, that would have been too easy.”

She nodded and tilted her head. A throaty laugh escaped her lips. She was seeing things that weren’t there again, but he didn’t ask about them because he wasn’t sure he wanted to know about them.

She tilted her head down, and her eyes glazed over as she followed something he couldn’t see. She gazed out of his window into the distance with a frown. He wondered what ghosts she saw.

Her head wobbled, her skin broke out in visible goose pimples, and her body swayed as if she was unsteady.

Should he get Mallen? He wrinkled his eyebrows and moved in his seat, then she blinked.

He watched the flickering movements with concern. He gaped until she suddenly jerked out of her stooped position as if someone was pulling her strings, and his mouth snapped shut.

She licked her lips and rubbed her mouth repeatedly. Her gaze wandered, taking the room in like she wanted to remind herself of where she was.

Whatever she had seen had a profound effect on her. “Perdy, what were you looking at?” he barked harshly. When she flinched, he gently asked, “What did you see?”

When he merely stared at her expectantly, she shook herself, her cheeks became red, and her eyes drifted away from his. When she looked at him in confusion, his eyes narrowed, his lips pressed together, and he crossed his arms.

Hands loose and relaxed, she shrugged unconcerned. “Pardon?” she said deliberately, pretending she didn’t hear his questions. Smiling blandly, she excused herself, “Err. I thought I saw a parakeet. Looked pretty.”

Staring at her in disbelief, he raised his eyebrows and crossed his arms. The female lied horribly.

He snorted and said, “Bullshit.” Her mouth twitched in response.

“Who are you dressing up for, Nick?” she asked him, wiggling her eyebrows.

“It’s none of your business, nosy,” he said.

For now, he wanted to maintain secrecy until she was ready to share. In this bubble of quiet, they exchanged half-lidded looks and shared intimate smiles that no one else knew about, which was endearing and also meant there was no interference.

He kept telling the female he was seeing that she should see someone her age since he was much older than her. But apparently, that didn’t matter to her.

It was amazing how stubborn this female was, but he appreciated her strength. He had to. Before, she hadn’t been strong enough…now she was.

Perdy suddenly smirked when his fingers tapped on the desk. “And the same to you,” she said.

He huffed with laughter.

That look had been about his female, and he didn’t want to risk her, so yeah, he was impatient and annoyed. If Perdy withheld information from him that involved his female’s safety, he would be pissed. She should share that information with him.

He gave her a disapproving look under his lashes. She sat back with smug satisfaction.

“Yes, I am withholding,” he said. “This is my personal life, and she has to decide if she wants to share. But, with you, a glance can mean a great deal more.” The last thing he needed was Perdy sending him knowing glances that would only pique his curiosity.

“A look?” she asked innocently, her lips twitching.

Snorting, he tutted, unconvinced. He knew she was trying to pull a fast one, and he wasn’t fooled by her attempt to look innocent.

Having become distracted by her visions, he decided to step back and refocus. Shaking his head, he coughed and replied, “Well, until we find this traitor. Any information deemed significant must be communicated on paper. Imagine the chaos of everyone shredding memos, notes, and security procedures.”

It was nothing short of a nightmare; they would live through it until they found this traitor.

Whoever it was, they weren’t exactly tech geniuses. That did not mean the person they were betraying them to was either. “Sensitive information is written down, and all electronic channels except inane chatter are closed.”

“Hmm, but this narrows the field even more. Drake can have his name cleared. We know it came from one of the four offices up here since he hasn’t left my side or gone anywhere publicly without many Numbers trailing him,” she explained.
